New Year’s Statement by Wang Dan
Revive Memory, Start Anew—An Appeal Regarding the Commemoration of the Thirtieth Anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen Square Democracy Protests and June 4 Military Crackdown

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the bloody repression of the 1989 Tiananmen Square democracy protests with the military massacre of June 4, 1989. Those of us who participated in the movement and witnessed the massacre issue a public appeal to all who care about China’s development and hope that democratic constitutionalism can be achieved.

In 1989 Chinese students and average citizens took to the streets to oppose official corruption and call for democracy. Their effort was bloodily suppressed by the Communist regime, and many people were killed and injured. This is a historical wound. This wound has been bleeding for 30 years. If the Chinese nation wants to move toward civilization, it cannot ignore this major historical tragedy. Under the strict official censorship of the Chinese Communist Party, memory of the June 4, 1989 military massacre has gradually faded. On the occasion of the 30th anniversary we call for a global effort to revive historical memory as a means of resisting authoritarianism and promoting democracy.

After the 1989 democracy movement was suppressed, China embarked on a path of becoming a rising Great Power. This path—from all appearances—has in the past three decades brought economic growth and improved people’s standard of living. But this development model underemphasizes human rights and democracy, and is an erroneous approach. China embarked on this path precisely because the Communist Party so adamantly resisted the demands at the heart of the 1989 pro-democracy movement: oppose official corruption and implement democratic constitutionalism. This fundamental conflict has led to a critical moment of transformation. Commemorating the 1989 pro-democracy movement and renewing demands for democracy is not just focusing on the past but also looking to the future. We call for the commemoration of the thirtieth anniversary of the Tiananmen Massacre to promote common understanding among people and reinvigorate the Chinese democracy movement.

All of us who have worked tirelessly for decades to achieve the ideal of democracy in China still believe that many who participated in the dynamic democracy movement—protests in Tiananmen Square, on the streets of Beijing, and in other cities in China—still retain the Spirit of 1989 and seeds of fire in our hearts. We cannot forget the classmates and friends who paid with their lives for our common ideals. It is now time for us to reunite, reorganize and relaunch. Today’s China is facing crisis and regressing on many fronts. The best commemoration is to keep the ideals of 1989 alive. Therefore, we call on the 1989 generation throughout the world to return to the cause. We call on the supporters of that year to rejoin us. We call on the new generation of Chinese youth to stand with us and form a new democratic front, and transform China into a more civilized and democratic nation.

The Chinese Communist Party must see that as long as China has not yet democratized, as long as the official verdict on the June 4, 1989 Tiananmen Massacre has not been overturned, we and all our friends who share our ideals will never forget and never give up!
