Reflection

Over this 7 week process I have learned alot about myself, and learned alot about online learning as well. Before taking this course I felt online learning was just a much easier way to complete a coure. I had the idea that online learning is just an easy a and a snipet of what the actual live class would be like. I was wrong, throughout these modules I had to be fully engaged if if i wanted to complete the assignments to the best of my ability. It was tough because the work seemed tedious but looking back on the expierence, this online course enabled me with tools and skills to become a better student online and in the classroom. I learned tips onto how to be an affective online learner, as well as using the internet for your benifit when it comes to assingments especially papers. Online learning is similiar to live class learning only there isnt an instructor there instructing you in person. You also have more time to finish your assignments before the due date. I came to realize over these modules, if one waits till the last minute to complete the work assigned, then it piles up and one can be overwhelmed by the load just like in the classroom. I came to realize if i broke my work for the week up in to a little each day, then by the end of the week I was either finished, or I had minimal work to accomplish. I learned you have to work smarter not harder when it comes to online learning. A person has to use the world wide web sometimes to find the answers they are looking for instead of just reading it out of a book. I learned that I am a hands on learner and a visual learner from the tests we took on some of the modules. This helped me affirm my belif because I already felt that I was this type of learner. By affirming this, the websites we tested on gave great tips to maximize my learning style so I can be affictive and productive while in the classroom. They also suggested things not to do so I dont stray too far away from what works for me. My favorite part of the course was the module where we had to reasearch those websites that will help us with writing papers, math, citations, among other things. This module really helped me hone some skills that will be benificial to me in the fall. Also, this module gave me skills and resources I can use in the future if I need help on a subject. This module also gave good study tips and cites that will help us study better in the fall. We were tought how to break up our information we gained from the lecture and convey it in a way that we can understand later on when it comes time to study. This was affective because we also learned what type of note taker we are. This is key beacause alot of students do not know how to take clear cut notes. Some try to write everything down but dont necessarily understand what they are writing down. In the fall, I will try and use the skills and tips I learned in this course to be a successful note taker so that I can preform better on the assesments because I truly understand the lesson I have learned. Overall, this was an affective course that enabled my to become successful in the classroom, and also in an online setting.

Searching and Researching

When searching and research one has to be cognicent of what they are searching, where they are searching, and how they are searching. When searching and researching, one should use key words and phrases to help convey what they are looking for in the search engine. Most of the time when you search genearl terms, you will find thousands of articals and websites. All of these websites are not useful for a multitude of reasons. When using reasearch you have to use reasearch that is reliable, quality, and detailed so that you can use it to gain or provide information. People run into problems when they use articles from yahoo or wikipidea because these are not scholarly articles to use when creating a paper or report. Scholarly articles can be useful and are usually found if you narrow down your search in the search engine. Articles that come from an organization are usually good scholarly articles because there are professionals who post on that website who are credible. Trying to use a non scholarly article in a paper is not a good idea because anyone could have provided the information so you dont know if its accurate or not. Most importantly, cite the website where you have received your information so that the credit is proporly given to who deserves it.

Web-Enhanced Listening and Viewing Strategies Blog Post

Working through this module I found how important it is to listen and take good notes while learning. I knew this was a staple to being successfull in a classroom, but through this module I learned some helpful tips to make my notes and listening skill even better. A student has to be prepared to listen when in a lecture, they have to be in the zone and focused on whats being said. A student has to listen to whats being taught, but also think about whats being said so that it makes sense to them.  Selective hearing is also important so that a student is listening to the important topics of the lecture and is not being bogged down in needless information. When taking notes a student has to be organized and ready to convey what they heard into quality notes that they understand. Its important to keep in mind to only write things down that you feel is important to know, having too many words on a page can be confusing later on. Notes help us memorize the material, select the key points of a lecture, and prepare us a study tool for future exams. Listening and note taking go hand and hand. A student is most successfull when they can listen to whats being said then translate it into notes they can understand. Using strategies that work best for you is important such as the skill of keywords. This skill enables a student to be selective when taking notes; by dissecting the keywords then further elaborating on them using examples and references to help with understanding the topic at hand.

How to write a research paper with citations

Check out this video on YouTube:

This educational video teaches how to write a quality paper with in text citations. This is very important skill to learn when writing a research paper becuase you are expected to cite scholarly articles you have found throughout your research process. Without correctly citing your sourcess, your teacher or the person reading your paper has no idea where you got your information, or if its in fact your own work. If a student uses someone elses work without giving them the proper credit, its considered plagerism and results in severe concequences. To correctly cite a source one must put in parenthesis the author’s name, and then the page number in which they found the information they are using. Also, wikipedia is a common source of information and is usually the first cite to come up when using a search engine; however, wikipedia is not a reliable source to be taking information and citing in your paper.

This informational video is important to all students especially higher level students.  Students have to write scholarly papers all the time and its important that they know how to find reliable sources, use them affectively in a paper, and cite them correctly giving the proper credit. Students may run into problems when they do not correctly cite their papers posing the question is the work they have submitted in fact their own. Its perfectly fine to use someone elses thoughts, and modify them to make them your own; however, a student still has to give the credit to the person in which they first received that infromation.

Online reading strategy and study tips

Throughout module 4 I found that online learning and study tips can be as benificial as learning in a classroom setting. With technology changing daily, we have the ability to reach thousands of site that can be helpful for learning success. The website that I found through this module I have found benificial in different ways, but the website assist me in multiple aspects of my learning. For example, http://www.dartmouth.edu/~acskills/success/index.html I found this website the most benificial because it provided tips and ideas I could use to in the future to become a better student. This website had multiple subjects I could select depending on what I struggled with the most. I mainly stuggle with note taking and organizing my notes so that I can study them later on. Having websites such as these at your desposile makes learning a bit more enjoyable in my opinion because there is always help for what you may struggle with. A student can use the internet for anything now adays, but if we use the internet to its maximum potential, then we can find anything we may need regarding education and study tools. Overall, this moduleprovided me with some new ways to be a student outside of the classroom. I have to be proactive when online learning because I have to investigate a read credible sites that will assist me and not hindure my learning.

Tips for Success-Terry McLaurin

To be a successful college student, a person has to be first and formost responsible. When your enter college your parents are not there to remind you to do everything such as; your  homework, your laundry, and to get up in the morning. I would suggest a future college student to be organized, with all of the work and notes you will have, it is adament for one to keep their classes in order. Also, know whats due when and complete your assignments early and or in a timely fashion. The more you put off your work, the more it will pile up on you towards the due date. I suggest that future college students should work on good note taking, then later in the day review your notes as a refresher for the next class session. Reading is also key when it comes to college, a student can not be successful without reading the material and retaining the information. The more a student reads then writes the infromationm, the better its remembered later on. Lastly, study often, college is different from highschool and a student can not be successful craming the night before a test. This is a poor habit to form because you are not learning all the information you need, just trying to stuff your brain. Efficiant study habits are key to being a top notch college student, you will be better prepared to acheive at a high level once you have put in the study hours.
