fullsizeoutput_4An experience from high school that was very important to me was being involved in the band for all four years. When I look back on my entire high school experience, this is the main part that really stands out to me. Sure, the classes I took were important and many of them really helped me prepare for college, but my most meaningful experience was definitely band. Many people look down upon the band, and say that the people involved are “nerds,” or “weird.” I never really saw it that way. The people in band withme were people that I saw and interacted with every single day at school, and on weekends as well for performances and other events. I really got to know the people there, and I saw them differently than the rest of the school did. They weren’t just the weird band kids. They were people I grew to like and respect, and band is where I met a lot of my friends in high school. Aside from the people I met, my experience throughout all four years was very meaningful as it taught me perseverance, leadership, and discipline. I was involved in both concert band and marching band, and for concert band we had to audition for chair placement each year. My freshman year, I was placed in the lowest of our three concert bands as the second lowest chair. Instead of quitting, I chose to take that as a learning experience and work harder. After a lot of practice, the following year I moved up to the second band, then my junior year I was placed in the first chair position in the highest band, and held that positionfor my senior year as well. I persevered and I accomplished a goal of mine that seemed implausible when I was a freshman. Marching band taught me discipline as it takes a ton of dedication and hard work to get things right, and I really had to put my mind to it. I learned leadership from being the leader of my section my senior year, and having to be in charge of seventeen other people and teach and critique them in order to make the show perfect. Although it was a lot of hard work, I do take this to be my most valuable experience from high school, and I’m very glad I stuck with it for all four years.

Something that is important from autumn semester of my freshman year is my decision to change my major. When I applied to college during my senior year, I decided to apply to the college of engineering because I was always good at math and science, so that was the natural choice to make. Everyone always said I would make a good engineer, including my parents. However, after a semester of college, I realized that engineering just wasn’t for me. I landed on getting a business degree and I really feel that having this type of job will be a good fit for me in the future. I can see myself enjoying it and being good at it, and I am excited for what my future holds.

About Me

IMG_5993

My name is Jamie McLaughlin and I am from Pickerington, OH, which is about 20 minutes away from Ohio State. In high school, I was involved in band for all 4 years and by my senior year I was the leader of my section in marching band and the principle player in concert band. I also swam from since I was a little kid up until my junior year of high school. My goals for my freshman year of college are mainly just to get the best grades I possibly can and to pick a pre major and what direction I plan on going with my career, as I am currently engineering undeclared.
