G.O.A.L.S Statement

I am very excited to fulfill the G.O.A.L.S. of the Honors & Scholars Center. I think I am most excited about the global awareness goal, because that’s something that really interests me. Although I have no concrete plans right now, I am looking forward to studying abroad at some point. I am hoping to major in Spanish, and studying abroad in Spain or Latin America is a huge goal of mine. I would love to be immersed in the culture and language in order to further my global awareness and the culture of other countries.

The REP hours required in Honors Intro Psychology are a great way to study the process of experimentation, and to experience the original inquiry goal of the H&S Center. I have been specifically choosing experiments that interest me to participate in, because I want to take in the experience. I would also really like to get started in experiments in the Genetics department as soon as possible, because that is my major and what I really want to do with the rest of my life. I have a first year seminar taught by a professor in the Molecular Genetics Department, which I’m hoping with give me an opportunity to meet other professionals in the department and give me connections for when I start looking into labs.

Academic Enrichment is a relatively straightforward goal, which is easily accomplished by taking as many honors credits as possible and focusing on taking classes that continue to challenge you. I really enjoy learning, especially about new topics, so I hope to achieve this goal by taking GE’s outside of my major as well. I had no idea the scope of classes that are available here and the large amount of them that count towards the GE requirements. Oddly enough, I’m really excited to look into scheduling for next semester, because there are so many options.

Leadership development is a harder goal for me, because I tend to be a more reserved person, but I am looking forward to furthering myself in this way. I have been thinking about the peer leader positions, and maybe becoming one next year. I would love to share my experience with incoming freshman, because I think its different for everyone and I definitely have some things to share that weren’t shared with me. I am involved in H2O church, and I could see myself becoming an intern there and becoming even more involved, with planning events or welcoming newcomers, etc.

There are so many options for the service engagement section of the H&S Center. I think the easiest way for me to get involved with community service is with H2O, because they have a lot of service opportunities. The one I am most excited about is a program they have that allows current students to tutor refugees in the city. Tutoring is something I did in high school and greatly enjoyed, and I would love to continue it in college.
