NASA

This Summer I will be interning at the NASA Glenn Research Center! I will be a programmer for data analysis of the space propulsion center located in their Plum Brook station in Sandusky Ohio.

With such an awesome opportunity, I wanted to talk about how my scholars program MMC (Media, Marketing, and Communications) helped get me here! Within MMC, we are given the opportunity to take classes inside the Sandbox. These classes/project groups range from learning how to make basic audio, to marketing, to professional development, all the way to learning how to create apps in Android.

So how did MMC help me end up at NASA? It starts by going back to second semester of freshman year. It was here where I learned WordPress, a tool used for creating websites. It was this knowledge that helped me land my internship for last Summer at a local business where I was able to take their old websites and create new ones that were e-commerce powered all by using WordPress! I strongly believe that being able to land that first internship and being able to put it on my resume strongly helped make my case to NASA.

But that’s not the only way that MMC helped me land this upcoming internship. My second year of college I have been working in the Sandbox for MMC as an instructor. I have been able to pass on my knowledge of WordPress and programming in languages like Java to fellow MMC students. This has helped to build my public speaking skills, organizational skills, leadership traits, and the ability to convey a message in a way that relates to whoever I’m speaking with.

I strongly believe that MMC was a key factor in getting my internship for the reasons above and I am thankful for having the opportunity to have been able to be in such a great program.

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

Ohio State makes it well known that a student should not be confined by their campus, but be able to go to the other side of the Earth and continue their learning. This ability is very enticing to me and interests me greatly. It is a great idea to be able to go out and show what I have learned in the real world. Whether it’s in New York or China, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I would love to partake in it. The next best part about this program is the ability to give back. To be able to succeed in the classroom is one thing, but it’s the other things you can do that truly make an impact. The ability to give back to the community is an extraordinary thing. I can not only learn about engineering, but apply it to situations in the real world and positively make an impact on them. I think this part is perfect for me because I would love to be able to give back as much as I have received along the way. The last trait I would like to talk about is Leadership. I have learned these past couple years about being a leader, and I think it has only made me a better person altogether. Whether it was being a captain on a robotics team, or being the leader on my golf team, leadership was asked of me, and I excelled at it. The ability to take others under your guidance and help mold them is an unbelievable feeling and experience. My favorite experience of being a leader was when I was able to lead my robotics team to the World Championship in California this year. The opportunity to lead when my team was counting on me was an honor. The Scholars Program at Ohio State is a great experience I would love to be involved in. The program has so much to offer, and I would not want to miss out on such an opportunity. The idea of not just learning my major, but the vast amount of ways I can use my studies as well, is a remarkable thing to think about. Being a Buckeye and a part of Scholars is a dream come true.

About Me

My name is Zach Mcguckin and I am currently a freshman studying Computer Science & Engineering at The Ohio State University. I chose my major due to my fascination in writing code and getting my hands on the latest technology. The capabilities of a computer are endless, and that’s something I love to test and play with.
