Week 7: Reflection

The greatest challenge of the drawing was using the ink.  Using such a permanent substance with unconventional tools for brushes definitely left less room for error.  Getting solid tone was hard too because of my “brushes” (a fork, spoon, straw, q-tip, and a napkin).  Using the spoon to get large amounts of ink and using the back of the spoon to spread the ink made it possible to get a solid black tone.  This however made shadows impossible to do.  I never used water to create different values in the ink which I believe was the downfall of the drawing.  Because everything is straight up ink and there are little to no shadows, the whole drawing looks flat.  On top of that I had to solely rely on my “brushes” for texture while if I created different values of ink with water I could have another means of showing texture.  Another thing to note is that because the still life I chose featured very small objects, even when scaling it up I had a difficult time filling the canvas.  Not to mention the objects I used weren’t very recognizable.  If I was to improve the drawing I would need to make better use of value.  This should be easier with something like a pencil or some graphite for me personally.  I would also make highlights more distinct and shadows more prevalent.    Perhaps if I use a different angle for the still life, I could fill up more of the canvas.  It would also help not to put so much emphasis on the outline so the objects can look more 3d.
