Year in Review

My first year in college was full or trial and error and finding my way in this new more independent world. Overall, this year has been more than I could have ever imagined. I learned a lot along the way that I will carry with me throughout my remainder here at OSU.

This year academically was full of pre-requisites, classes that needed hard work, determination, and time management to make sure they ended successfully. Being a Pre-Nursing student brought with it a lot of anxiety and stress I hadn’t experienced before that at times hurt my confidence but that’s a low that comes with the college experience. I learned how to best study in ways that I picked up the large amount of information in the most productive manner. During the week I tried to focus on getting ahead on homework so that by the end of the week I had some time to spend with friends. My friends and I basically became a study group that way we could hang out and be productive at the same time.

Being in a college dorm, you are constantly surrounded by people and at times that is a lot of fun, but I also learned that you need to make time for yourself to be alone or else you can become burnt out on social activities but as much as it relates to the social aspect of college, it also relates to the academic side of it. I learned that although I might have a lot of stuff to do for classes, everyone needs to take breaks so that their mental health doesn’t suffer but also so that when they do work it is their best work.

Early on, I was blessed to find a group of friends that became my core group that I hung out with all the time, it’s nice to have friends that have the same determination as you in school but also have many hobbies, etc. that you also have.

This year, overall was amazing and my friends and I are already excited for next years adventures!

G.O.A.L.S.

Serving the community is something I have always enjoyed doing throughout high school, so when it came to do it college I was excited to find new ways to do so. This year I was able to complete over 20 hours of service, and although I was there to help others, those experiences taught me a lot as well.

This year I became involved in many different organizations and events that helped me reach my service goal. Through the nursing club NSPIRE, I had the opportunity to spend many Saturday and Sunday mornings out helping in the Columbus community. I worked with the homeless at a local church on Saturday mornings, checking their vitals and giving out personal care products to those who can’t afford supplies or a doctor’s visit. Another way I worked with the community through NSPIRE was with the YWCA of Columbus, this is an organization that houses and helps homeless families learn how to get back on their feet and turn their life around, NSPIRE visited the families for a few hours giving the mothers a place to learn about safe sleep and other things for their children, and giving them a safe place to talk about what they are going through while we babysit the children and give them endless attention allowing them to “just be a kid”. These opportunities have given me such a different outlook on life, and I’m very grateful for those experiences.

When I’m not doing activities with NSPIRE, most of my other community outreach events are with the Health Science Scholars. This year I got to experience various events from the Community Commitment event to kick off the year where we cleaned up our local parks, made blankets for cancer patients at The James, or danced all night to raise money for Nationwide Children’s and the patients fighting for their life there through BuckeyeThon. A lot of hours were put in but all so worth it to help give back to the world that has given me so much. I enjoyed every part of my first year at college and having these amazing opportunities to give back.

About Me

Hello! My name is Morgan McCutcheon and I am a first year student as a Pre-Nursing student. I am from around the Newark, Ohio area where I live with my parents and younger brother, Sean. I like to learn in different ways depending on the subject and love to challenge myself to new and harder things. I am focused on my academics as I hope to someday become a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner with a minor in either communications or Spanish. Growing up with food allergies nurses helped me get through tough obstacles and treated me like family; so my goal is to help kids get through their obstacles while making it as painless as possible and to let them know they aren’t alone in their battle. Growing up I was very involved in school and extracurricular activities like Spanish Club, NHS, FFA, and 4-H. I love being in group settings so ideas can be shared and we can push each other to be the best we can be. In my free time I like to participate in organizations and hang out with friends outdoors doing new things. From the age of nine until this year I have been very involved in 4-H and the fair program where I have filled many leadership positions in my county and at the state level. Through 4-H and other organizations I have been involved in, I have gained skills including: public speaking, time management, organization, responsibility, respect, the ability to communicate well with others, and many other skills that help me to be outgoing and a leader/role model for those I have helped throughout my lifetime. As I start this new chapter at OSU I hope to gain new skills, learn many things, make new friends, and in the end get the degree I have dreamed of getting since I was little.
