Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: In order to achieve the goal of global awareness, I plan to select coursework that gives me a new, global perspective and enhances my understanding of the world beyond the country I live in. Specifically, I wish to take courses in which I examine the global perspective on health and medicine, taking on a minor in global public health. Later in my academic career, I would love to enhance my global awareness with a study abroad opportunity.
Original Inquiry: This goal is especially important for my academic experience at Ohio State, as I plan to work in a research lab as an undergraduate assistant for four years. Right now, I volunteer in a molecular genetics lab and plan to take on my own research project by either my sophomore or junior year. With this project I hope to both present my research at the Denman and write a thesis in order to graduate with a research distinction. Contributing towards the research in my field is important to me as I hope to continue onto graduate school in which I can continue to make original inquiries.
Academic Enrichment: My plans to add academic enrichment involve making my classes a top priority, and taking courses that challenge me as a student. I aim to not only reach the expectation, but exceed the expectation in that I learn not just about my major, but topics across all disciplines. The honors program provides higher level coursework, and I provide the drive to take my classes as an opportunity to not just get a grade but enrich my academic experience.
Leadership Development: To reach this goal, I plan to seek out leadership both inside and outside of academics. Within the classroom, I want to be a leader among my peers as I seek out new opportunities to learn the material in comprehensive ways and always set the example of proper academic conduct. Outside of the classroom, I plan to develop my leadership in extra-curricular activities in which I can again be a leader among my peers, but also a leader on campus and in the community. I hope to be in a service-oriented club in which I can lead others into providing services for the community.
Service Engagement: I plan to achieve service engagement by both participation in service-oriented clubs and participation in service opportunities provided by the university. Through a club, I can maintain a regular commitment to service and focus on a particular area of need in the community, like availability of medical care. With university events, I can join the community here at Ohio State and be a part of a large effort to provide service to the Columbus community. Through service engagement I can learn that attending Ohio State is not just about the classes, but the community as well.

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.   For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Artifacts

[Artifacts are the items you consider to be representative of your academic interests and achievements. For each entry, include both an artifact and a detailed annotation.  An annotation is a reflective description of the artifact that attempts to communicate its significance.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. About Me

20150810_173620-1When I was a student at Lancaster High School, I spent the majority of my time balancing the multiple extracurricular activities with which I was involved. I managed the marching band’s flute section and led the technical crew for the school’s drama club. When I wasn’t involved in either of those groups, there was always Latin club and making sure the preparations for the Ohio Junior Classical League (OJCL) were running smoothly. My participation in Science Olympiad was invaluable, as the subject matter helped guide me toward my interest in science. My membership and leadership in our local chapter of the National Honor Society also helped connect me to the community through service.

While in school, I took any opportunity to write research papers or create projects based on my passion for genetics. I especially enjoyed presenting the history of DNA and how the study of genomics has created revolutions in medicine and healthcare to my peers. The diversity of these opportunities allowed me to narrow my educational goals and have led me to my enrollment at The Ohio State University.

I am currently a freshman undergraduate student at The Ohio State University. My current academic goal is to achieve a bachelor of science in molecular genetics, following the pre-professional medical track, with the intention of minoring in bioethics. While studying at Ohio State, I plan to get involved with the campus by joining service groups that focus on promoting the health of the campus and the community.

Professionally, I intend to pursue research in molecular genetics. Upon graduation, I plan to continue working in a lab with a full-time research position. With this experience I hope to continue my education and earn a Master’s Degree in my field.
