Semester In Review

My first semester at The Ohio State University was a challenging one.  I was away from home surrounded by uncertainty.  However, I fully embraced this uncertainty by trying new clubs, such as Pen PALS and Global Health Initiative, going to study sessions to support my academics, and reaching out to new people.  I faced many changes in my academic and social life.  While these changes were daunting, I feel that I took the proper time to grow and adjust, and will continue to do these things for the rest of the year.  I look forward to finishing this semester with a high GPA and with the excitement of the upcoming semester.

Academic Excellence

My high school experience was a relatively easy one: I could do well on tests and in classes without an obscene amount of preparation.  Now that I have begun studying at Ohio State, I have had to increase the amount of studying I complete during the week a good bit.  However, I love the challenge of learning new, challenging material that requires my full attention and effort to absorb.

A Representation of My Goals

Throughout high school, I was a part of the St. Lucy’s Auxiliary of the Blind, which is a program that donates money to its charity, and the members volunteer a minimum of 150 hours in order to receive a St. Joan of Arc medallion.  The service hours I gathered throughout high school were no challenge; I loved being involved with my community in such a positive way.  I made connections with people who I wouldn’t normally interact with.  Overall, I still value community service and hope to stay involved in my future medical career.

Welcome!

My name is Madelyn McConaghy, and I am a first year biology student on a pre-med track at The Ohio State University.  I am from Pittsburgh, PA.  Back in Pittsburgh, I indulged in my interest in science through attending science lectures through the Westinghouse program my school participated in.  I was also heavily engaged with my community through volunteer work at my local hospital and senior living home.  These experiences have shaped my goals for the future: to work hard in the science field in order to help others.

My G.O.A.L.S for the future

I do not want to use each aspect of the G.O.A.L.S objective to better my resume, but to better myself and broaden my horizons.  I hope to use global awareness, original inquiry, leadership skills, and service engagement to provide myself with the necessary experiences to tackle the various health-related issues in the world.  I have a great interest in global public health, and believe each aspect of G.O.A.L.S would help me to pursue a career in public health.

Service Engagement

Throughout high school, I dedicated a large portion of my time to volunteerism in my community.  I hope to continue this habit as I go through college.  My freshman year, I participated in the Pen PALS program and devoted about thirty minutes every other week to write to my young pen pal.  This young girl is an elementary student at a nearby Columbus City Public School, and it has been a wonderful experience to learn about her life and to help her improve her reading and writing skills.

OSU Soccer Game

Early in September, I attended the OSU men’s soccer game with some of my scholars peers.  After watching the team’s hard work, I saw the importance of perseverance in the face of hardship and the importance of teamwork.  Although our team was losing, they still tried their best and took the loss gracefully.  Their dedication to playing well despite this loss demonstrated that failures and losses can still be turned into something positive.  I enjoyed the game, and enjoyed my time with my fellow scholars peers!
