Since arriving at The Ohio State University, multiple facets of my life have been altered. I have made an all new friend group, found out what my interests are, and found my love for research. The biggest change that occurred in my opinion though, is the amount of responsibility and independence that I have now in comparison to high school.
During high school, I was responsible for all of my schoolwork, but if I were to forget an assignment, I could always check online to find out what the assignment was. In college, it is solely your responsibility, and no one is going to go out of their way to remind you what the homework is. Along with this, in high school teachers would hold your hand and walk you through the material, while the professors in college will essentially provide you with the basic material, but it is your responsibility to determine how to apply said material. In order to make this transition high amount of responsibility, I have made some slight changes. For example, I keep a to-do list in order to keep track of my weekly homework, and I have increased the amount of studying I do for each class in order to understand the various concepts. If I don’t understand something, then I take time to go to office hours.
In conclusion, college has taught me a lot of things, varying from academics to social to extracurricular lessons. The most important lesson is definitely how to become independent, and this along with all of the other changes made will help me in to long run because it helps me to be a better student.
