Academic Enrichment: I talked to an upperclassmen HSS student, Ren Kuzmanovich, about her future plans and how HSS has helped her. As a current junior in the biology major with a Spanish minor and pre-med, her main focus is studying for the MCAT which she is taking in June. She started studying in February and is looking forward to taking it. This summer she will be conducting research in farm life. Ren has always wanted to be premed and is looking forward to her future as a physician. I admire how hard Ren works in school while also being active on a soccer intramural team, being an RA, and being very involved in the HSS community. She really likes HSS because it gave her a really easy way to meet friends with similar interests and career goals and it also gave her connections into the professional world. I wish Ren the best of luck on her MCATs and her exciting future!
Leadership Development:
Service Engagement: This year I volunteered 31 hours at OSUWMC in Harding Hospital. I helped the nursing staff by interacting with patients, helping with filing, serving dinner, and any other patient/visitor needs. This experience was so rewarding and eye opening. This was the first time I had ever volunteered in a hospital and it really taught me a lot about hospital dynamics and how the floor staff need to work as a cohesive team. When everyone is working together and communicating, so much can get done. Patients feel like their needs are being met and feel content with their care. Also, since I worked on a high risk floor in the psychiatric hospital, having an effective floor team was essential to prevent accidents and keep everyone safe. Overall this experience was exciting and helped further convince me to work in the health care field. I loved helping the staff and the patients and I would 100% volunteer again.
