Biography

Picture 1 : This is me.

Amirul Amin Mazlan, also known as Amirul or Am. He was the eldest among his four siblings. Am comes from Malaysia, located at Southeast Asia near Singapore and Indonesia. He just arrived at Columbus about two months ago, with his friends. He is currently enrolled in Ohio State University as transfer student in sophomore year. Besides, he came here as sponsor student from Department of Public Service of Malaysia. As for now, he stays at East Norwich Avenue at Columbus. It is single family house which are close to High Street and North Campus OSU area. This location helps him to get to his classes by bicycle or sometimes walks if raining. His housemates too come from Malaysia and it really assists him in having good communication and assign tasks between them easily. This bond can reduce his longing for the homeland due to having someone he knows here. This is because his family lives at Malaysia and it took 24-hours flight to get there from here. Although the distance separates them apart, he still contacts them regularly using Skype for video call, asking their condition and daily progress. He loves to get involved in outdoor activities. He plays hockey since in high school. In addition, he too enjoys indoor activities such as playing electronic games at computer, Xbox and Playstation.

Am had previous school years in Malaysia since primary school to college. During his high school, he got into boarding school from 2009 to 2013. He learned to manage his time efficiently; doing homework and do discussions; exercise in the evening; mix with school’s community that came from different background. Aside from that, he also makes mistakes in which he overcome to improvise himself to be better in the future. This makes him learn to live independently without having family’s presence around him earlier, which helps him in living at United States alone. Besides, in the middle of his high school, he had to transfer to other school. He thought that it could very boring as he does not has any friend there at first, but then he met such friendly friends which also play field hockey like him. Then, he joined the school’s team shortly after he enters the school. He played many tournaments, win some of the tournaments and got chance to meet another rival which are on another level. In addition, his journey in field hockey did not end there. In his college year, he also met new friends who had played hockey for their previous school in the college. Am’s passion in field hockey had helps him in adapting with new situation.

Reason on choosing Ohio State University

He chooses to further his study at Ohio State University (OSU) for his bachelor degree in engineering. He chose OSU because of their diverse of student body which consists of student from many countries due to high rate of admission for international students. OSU’s activities for their student had attracted Am’s interest. This activity would allow him to learn new culture of people from Ohio and also from other countries. Moreover, OSU offers variety of resources to aid their student such as Youngkin Success Center. Youngkin Success Center assists student in solving their academic and wellness problem. There are also many clubs established by student and each of it has different aim for their club. Therefore, he already joined coed field hockey club here and participate with their training sessions. His main aim in coming here is to study in electrical engineering major. This is because OSU department of electrical engineering is qualified by Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). This qualification motivates him, thus hopefully can secure a job when he returns to his homeland, Malaysia. He loves electrical engineering since in his high school because of the process of electrics work. Electrical engineering is very demanding and needed by his homeland. He hopes that he can apply the knowledge he learn at OSU into his electrical system in Malaysia.
