Motivation Module 6

In this module honestly one of the most useful things I learned was learning about my environment as a motivator. Before this module I never really was motivated to do much unless it benefited me if I am being honest, but learning about the environments I am and how they differently affect me and my motivation definitely opened up my eyes and I could see how different environments did in fact have an effect on me. One of the practices I have started is doing school work by myself to limit outside distractions, I also keep my phone away from me so I can stay focused. Ideas from this module I can and will put into practice for the future are for one, using progress as a motivator. I tend to get down and feel bad for myself at the beginning of tasks/studying so by using the technique of progress as a motivator I can be motivated by the success I have had while completing whatever task. Advice I would give other students is, do not do something simply because you are not motivated to do so at the time, just give some effort and knock out whatever task is at hand.

Module 5 Searching and Researching

In this module, we talked about searching and researching strategies to use for writing papers. For me personally though the most useful piece of information, I got from this module was the in-depth explanation of how to write an academic paper. In our slides, the link provided to use that shows us how to write an academic paper is the link that taught me and helped me become a better academic writer. Looking at specific examples of things I learned from this module and already applied to my life though is the “how not to search” piece of the module, I realized I have to use credible sources (which I obviously already knew) but I learned that some sites are not good enough to use as credible sources so I try to focus my search towards sites ending in .org or .gov. Ideas from this module I can put into practice are the bibliographic managers and citations websites I can go to, to help me carefully and properly put together my citations and bibliography at the end of my academic papers. The advice I would give to students after learning this module is to use your online tools and resources, there’s plenty of help out there if you just look for it.

Module 4 Web enhanced listening and viewing strategies

In this module I learned a lot of things about how to take better notes, listen better in class, and how to use my online resources. The most useful think I would say I learned is how to become an active listener, the strategies given in the powerpoint gave me a perfect blueprint of what to look and listen for while taking my notes and how to stay engaged. A specific thing I have already implemented into my life is the use of online resources, I had a class I was studying for and decided to watch the short crash course videos on specific topics and the visual aspect of it really helped me understand the topics better than my textbook could. Ideas I could put into place for the future is the use of note organization when I am writing them out. My notes tend to lack lots of structure which can be fixed by using methods I learned in this module. Advice I would give is, remain engaged in lectures when it comes to note taking, and use your resources because you never know what could help you learn a certain topic, no matter how it is taught.

Module 3 efficiency in the digital age

This module taught us a lot about how to become efficient students in an age where we have plenty of technological and digital outlets to help us manage ourselves better. Honestly though we don’t always use these things to our advantage, or at least I don’t. One of the most useful things I gained from this module was the three techniques for helping to stop procrastinate, one of the techniques was to break down large or hard tasks, the second technique is to ask yourself the three magical questions (I am assuming you all watched the youtube video in the lecture so I won’t dive into them) and finally weigh the ultimate goal versus the immediate desire. For me personally a specific example of something I have put to use in my life already is the act of remembering the ultimate goal versus the immediate desire, I used to tend to just do what was best for me in the moment instead of looking at the bigger picture and doing what was best for me in the long run. The advice I would give to you all is, do not waste your time on things and even in certain cases people who do not deserve it, focus on what is best for you and set yourself to be in the best situation you can be in when it comes to setting goals.

Module 2 Communicating and Collaborating

The most useful thing I learned in this module for me personally was about the emailing process and tips for emailing my professors which I needed help with because I honestly have never really had to email teachers while in high school. I used to be awful at communication I would just assume people would know what I wanted as long as they knew me, I soon came to realize that that method does not work what so ever and made me look dumb by not communicating what I am feeling or trying to explain. Collaborating was also not my strong suit as I used to hate working in groups on projects or being on team sports. I run track for that very reason, because it is mainly a single person sport and I do not have to really rely on anyone. Collaborating on projects and group class work however, I have gotten better at as I used to just go and get mad at the people who were not doing their part of the assignment, now when I face that issue I either A: try to encourage them and build them up while working because maybe they are not confident on themselves or B: If said person is blatantly not helping contribute and has no care. or concern for the work at hand, I just do my part and let the professors know my group mate did not feel like contributing in a helpful manner.
