Module 7: Keys to Motivation for Online Learning

Throughout this module there were several concepts that I found quite useful. One of the more useful concepts that I learned was delivered through the article “The 5 best apps to help you fight your smartphone addiction”. This article suggests the use of several apps that encourage breaks from your phone. And it was within this article that I found out about the app “Forest”. This app grows a tree for the length of time you can stay away from you phone. The goal is to stay away from your phone the longest to grow the tree the most. I have already put this app into use in order to keep away from my phone as I already struggle from interruptions stemming from phone use. I recommend this app to all students who find it difficult to leave their phone alone while studying. For the future, I plan on looking at my sources of motivation differently than I have in the past. I plan on using my progress as a motivator instead of trying to draw inspiration out of thin air. I recommend all students to focus their energy to one task at a time and use this progress as a motivator and stay away from spreading yourself too thin.

Module 6: Searching and researching: The Foundations of Academic Writing

As a college student, it is nearly impossible to write a paper without using some sort of outside source of information. That is why it is so important to establish source credibility to distinguish what knowledge is appropriate and true. Establishing source credibility would have to be the most important thing that I learned in this module. I have already utilized the three source credit categories, Reliability, Quality, and Utility, to search for sources in one of my logistics papers. By answering the questions underneath each of the categories you can guarantee that you will find the most credible source possible. Another aspect of this lesson that I would like to apply in the future would be the open source textbooks article on the differences between college and high school writing.  I found this very useful as I often need reminding that college level writing is much different than high school writing. I plan on incorporating the lessons learned from this article into my future papers. One of which lessons was searching for key words in a college paper prompt and using different techniques to shape your essay or paper in response . I plan on starting my future papers with finding the key words and shaping my paper after that.

Module 5: Web-Enhanced Listening and Viewing Strategies

As a student, it is imperative to be able to absorb information at an efficient and fast rate. The primary way to do so would be to take notes on subject material. The most Useful lesson that I learned from this module would be that it is better for your overall learning to take hand written notes over typing notes. Hand writing notes forces you to take broad and plentiful information and summarize while processing it into condensed notes. This contrasts the typed notes as that form allows you to type down more material but less processing of that material is done. I have begun taking my logistics notes by hand instead of typing to begin this week in an effort to better comprehend the material the first time taking note of it. I plan on completely eliminating my typing of notes and switching to a more active style of learning that includes analyzing, processing, and summarizing information within hand written notes. Despite the alluring positives to typing notes such as increased speed of note taking, different format styles, and flexibility in editing, I advise students to stay away! Hand writing your notes allows students to engage and understand the material in much more depth than if the notes were typed. Writing down your notes forces you to take large amounts of information and process it into important points while furthering ones overall understanding of the information. Students should seek to utilize this form of note taking to aid in a more efficient form of learning.

Module 4: Web-Enhanced reading and study strategies

When evaluating everything that I have learned in this module, I would have to say the most important topic that I found most useful and relevant to my life would be the concept of Meta cognition. When analyzing how I study and learn I find that I often lose interest and lose sight on my end goal of actually learning the material instead of going through the motions. Meta cognition is a great way to stay involved and become an active learner by gaining knowledge and applying it. I have already put the concept into use while studying for my logistics class. I will stop myself while studying and reflect on what I am learning and even try to apply it to a situation in my own life. LSU center for academic success puts a heavy emphasis on actually learning and applying the material and not just memorizing it. They also say that it is important to analyze the processes by which we are studying and to maximize our ability to actively learn and engage in the material. I plan on applying this to my literature class as well as I reflect on my material and engage in active learning. I suggest to all students to engage in metacognition and reflect on their material and study processes while studying to become an active learner. The biggest thing is to actually comprehend the material and not just memorize it.

Module 3: Efficiency in the Digital Age

This module has actually been quite awakening for me as a person and has really helped me dissect what some of my studying/time management flaws are. The most useful thing I learned through this lesson was that having solid routines is a key principle of time management skills. Princeton University’s article, “Principles of Effective Time Management for Balance, Well-being, and Success”, allowed me to Identify this flaw in various parts of my everyday life. One specific instance of a situation in which I took this information and applied it to my life would have to be with my sleep schedule. I sleep much longer than the average person and sleep/wake up at a varied rate. I have now began sleeping and waking up at a constant time every day and night aiming for around 8 hours. I definitely feel more energized throughout my day and would highly recommend to aim for a consistent 8 hours every night to all students.  Something else that I learned from this module would be that I must control my environment and organize it. Through this skill I will in the future complete most of my studying and work in the libraries on campus. My advice for other students would be taking charge of your routines and building healthy academic habits are important. Another piece of advice would be to organize your environment and place yourself in a situation where you aren’t trying to multitask.
