Effects of COVID-19 on College Students’ Mental Health in the United States: Interview Survey Study
J Med Internet Res 2020;22(9):e21279

This journal is written by Son, Hedge, Smith, Wang, and Sasangohar. They performed a study to show the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the mental health of college students in the year 2020. They interviewed 195 students at a large public university in the United States to understand the effects that covid has had on their mental health and well-being. Their data shows that 138 out of the 195  students (71%) showed an increase in stress and anxiety since the beginning of the pandemic. Their conclusion states that the covid-19 pandemic has negatively impacted the mental health of students in higher education in the United States. Although their study is strong it can be questioned whether or not they interviewed enough college students to make a definitive final conclusion. Still, they manage to present a strong argument that the pandemic has negatively affected the mental health of college students. I found this journal article on a scholarly website that contains peer-reviewed journal articles on medical research. The website is called JMIR publications. I found this source simply by searching “the effects of covid-19 on college student’s mental health.”

Paragraph on TradeMark’s Presentation

TradeMark gave a very detailed presentation about copyrights. At first, he asked the class if we had ever seen the FBI warning that shows up at the beginning of movies regarding piracy. Usually, the message gives a warning saying if a person is caught pirating DVD’s then they are subject to a $250,000 dollar fine and up to five years in federal prison. TradeMark basically told us that this message is mostly used to scare people. It is very rare when a person actually gets caught. He then went on to discuss the subjects of public domain, creative commons, open-source, fair use, orphan works, trademarks, and patents. He said that copyright is used to promote creativity. He then discussed the topic of plagiarism. He talked about how authors want students to borrow and sample their work.

Interview Answers

  1. The pandemic has negatively affected the mental health of college students in the past year and a half. It is mentally draining to have to sit on your laptop all day with little to no social interaction.
  2. Yes and no. Some professors have gotten more strict on deadlines and others have gotten more lenient. If classes are asynchronous it can be more stressful because it’s more on the student to keep up with the deadlines.
  3. Yes, some subjects are just very difficult to teach and learn online. Some lessons are just meant to be heard in person. More difficult science and math classes are particularly hard to learn in a virtual setting.
  4. Yes, there are fewer areas to study. It is stressful to have to find a seat. There is also the constant worry that someone who sat at the seat before you may have had covid-19.
  5. I feel like I have to be more organized. It is hard to keep track of important emails. Also if classes are taught asynchronously you have to keep track of all of the assignments by yourself. Self-organization is a crucial part of succeeding during a time of online learning.
  6. Yes, some professors are not necessarily tech-savvy. They are slow to post lectures and lesson plans. This can cause for stress levels to go up. Also, some professors show no mercy when it comes to the level of difficulty for the class even if it is being taught online.
  7. Yes, especially with no in-person classes or clubs it is very difficult to have that social interaction. It is especially hard for new students to meet college friends if they walked in literally having known nobody.
  8. Yes, especially younger students who are trying to meet new people. It can be hard for kids to have to do online school in a dorm room all day long with little to zero social interaction. They may start to think that they have poor social skills when this is not the case at all.
  9. Yes, the stress of deadlines for asynchronous classes can cause students to develop unhealthy sleep schedules. Overall this just depends on the student. It depends on how well they spend their time completing school work during the day.
  10. It may not be difficult however it will certainly be an adjustment. Taking in-person classes is completely different when it comes to studying, interacting, sleeping, and just being physically active. It may be a struggle for some kids but this may be a very positive thing for some kids as well.

Application to Laura’s Presentation

I really enjoyed Laura’s presentation and I can tell she has a passion for the history of Columbus and Ohio as a whole. I thought it was super cool when she opened up a current map of Columbus and showed us where the individual locations of events that happened in 1913 are located. I especially enjoyed seeing the old picture of the stadium and the pen drawings of where Morrill and Lincoln Towers would have been located. It was interesting that she could tell that the old photo of the stadium was not actually from 1913 but rather 1939 or 1952. She could determine that the photo was mislabeled. I think Laura gave me a new perspective on doing research on older photos. You have to do a little bit of digging and identifying. You cannot just assume it is from the year it was labeled. Her research on the two murders was also quite unique. Overall she did an excellent job.

Application to Scott’s Presentation

After observing Scott’s presentation I feel like I have learned numerous important things about the web and specific search engines. Google’s search engine is very dominant. Scott talked about how google may always be watching every little thing that you search. This does not make me feel very safe when I am on the internet. He discussed a few other good search engines that could be used as a substitute for google. He also discussed the importance of privacy on the internet. Another thing Scott discussed is how mobile phones have been bad for privacy on the internet over the last 10 years specifically.
