About Me

My name is Michael Martins and I graduated from Summit High School in 2016. I’m a freshman attending The Ohio State University, but originally from New Jersey. At Ohio State I am a member of the Dunn Sports and Wellness Scholars Program and I am enrolled in the Fisher School of Business.

Year in Review

This year was my second year apart of the Michael J. Dunn Sports and Wellness Scholars program. I’ve been exposed to many great speakers from Gene Smith the Athletic Director at Ohio State to the Ray Stien, a writer for the Columbus Dispatch, to J.R a worker in the Recreational Sports department. Through these presentations I’ve learned a lot about health and the many different approaches that can provide healthy lifestyles for successful professionals. Furthermore, as successful individuals I’ve also seen a common theme of work ethic and being proactive is what allowed many of these speakers to achieve their accomplishments and have rewarding careers.

I’ve also had the opportunity to be a DSWS parent and help introduce the first year scholar students into the the scholars and Ohio State communities. This has been a great way for me to not only create new relationships with the new members of the Dunn Sports and Wellness program but also the opportunity to act as a leader and mentor. Welcome week was one of my favorite memories as a freshman, and the experience being on the other side as a sophomore to help run the program was extremely rewarding seeing the relationships that were made and how they have grown since that first week.

This year has also been full of many fun and interesting formal events within the scholars program. Throughout the year there are the social events we have for certain holidays like Halloween, Christmas, and valentines day. Those are always a great time to see everyone and catch up outside of the more formal weekly Tuesday meetings. Outside of this we’ve had many other activities with a more competitive spirt. Some of my favorite memories from these activites come from the battleship and wheelchair basketball tournament.

Lastly, the most notable event from this year was the Hocking Hills trip I went on in March. 20 of us spent a weekend in a huge cabin in the Hocking Hills State park. Spending our time disconnected from our phones and the internet we played cards, board games, campfire games, hiked, and generally enjoyed each others company. It was an amazing exclamation point to the end of the year and the end of my time as a Dunn Sports and Wellness Scholar.
