Community Service

For my community service this semester, I did a couple of different things. First of all, back home I am apart of a community outreach group and we participated in a shoe drive. Over several days, we collected shoes from around the community, packaged them together and gave them to kids who needed them. That took about three hours of time. I also went home for Thanksgiving break and I participated in a disaster relief effort at Matthew 25 ministries. For about three hours we folded and packaged things to send to those in need. Lastly, through DSWS I volunteered about five hours at the Columbus Marathon on October 21st where we set up and handed out drinks at a water station.

True Colors Reflection

After taking the true colors test I found out that I was strongly gold, meaning that I am very organized, consistent, and dependable.  Consistency is a very important thing to me, for gold people like to have a set schedule and to do the same thing everyday. After discussing in class and attempting to plan a vacation, I found that I am certainly not an orange person who is spontaneous and impulsive. The orange people mainly focused on where to go when they all chimed in with different places, while I was sitting here knowing that this trip would never happen, because there simply wouldn’t be enough time. While it would be great and unstressful to have a team full of golds, it wouldn’t be ideal. Gold people would always be the prepared ones, with a proper plan in place. However, we all know that that doesn’t always work. If everything went as scheduled, then the gold lead group would be very successful. But, when things got off schedule, this is when the orange thrives. They are great at adapting to the circumstances. While they my not be the most prepared, they will be ready for whatever is thrown at them, opposed to gold people who are always prepared, but struggle when things don’t go our way.

The main thing that I learned from this activity is that every color is needed to be successful. Things won’t always go as planned, so you need orange. People will start to get down, so you need blue. And people will start to lose focus so you need green. That’s what’s great about society. As much as we all would like it our way, uniqueness is what really keeps us strong and successful.

Leadership Reflection

I’ve seen leadership in many ways in sports, several first hand experiences of coaches and teammates in different ways guiding the team. Whether it be a halftime speech or leading by example, both are effective ways to lead. Leadership has many attributes to it. Specifically pertaining to the aforementioned examples, leadership is inspiring, beleiving, and guiding the way. When people think of leadership, they often think of the typical pre game speech. In reality, leadership is much more than that. Leaders don’t have to be the outgoing and loud people. They can just as well be the softspoken, timid person who does their own thing.

About Me

My name is Alex Martini and I am starting my first year at Ohio State this fall. I am a Sports Industry major with thoughts of eventually adding a Data Analytics major/minor as well. Because of my love for sports, I joined the Dunn Sports and Wellness scholars group here at OSU. Through that, I hope to stay active by playing intramural sports and other general activities with my class and floor mates. I’ve always had a passion for statistics and math (especially in sports), which I hope will land me my dream job one day somewhere along the lines of sports analysis.
On a more personal note, in my free time I love to play sports, hang out with my friends, and can never pass up a good tv show. I’m from Cincinnati, Ohio so it’s safe to say I’m a die hard Reds and Bengals fan, but I’ve always dreamed of coming to The Ohio State University. I have a twin brother, Nick, who studies Kinesiology at Miami University and a sister, Logan, who now lives in Los Angeles, California. I would love to study abroad one day to see the different aspects of the world. I can’t wait to see what opportunities Ohio State opens up for me!
