Year in Review

In the past year, I have done a lot to accomplish the goals I outlined my first semester at Ohio State. I have taken many courses to expand my knowledge of different cultures around the world. Cultural Anthropology, African American History, and Linguistics courses have all helped broaden my horizons by focusing on cultures different from my own and their views on race, gender, and more. I have continued activity in the Theme Park Engineering Group, where I have worked on projects that use software to design roller coasters, as well as work on a team to develop unique themes and stories for attractions. In addition, I have accepted an offer to work at Humana this summer. This is a tremendous opportunity to learn, as well as utilize skills I have acquired in school. I have made strides in my goal of academic enrichment, as I currently have a cumulative GPA of 3.83. This next year I will begin work towards my Business and Statistics minors, and I have only four classes left to complete my Actuarial Science major. These minors will enhance my knowledge on subjects that are related to my field, as well as help me attain VEEs. Furthermore, I passed my first Actuary Exam, FM, this past August and am currently studying to take my second, Exam P, this May. I hope to get involved in different volunteer activities at Humana, and maybe take a Buck-I-Serv trip in the future. I could familiarize myself with another culture while also doing work to help improve a community. In Summation, I have taken many steps this past year towards meeting my goals, but there is still much work to be done and I am excited for the future.

My Goals

Global Awareness– To accomplish this goal, I plan on enrolling in anthropological social studies course that examines Peoples and Cultures of different regions of the world. This course would allow me to become educated on both traditional and contemporary peoples in different cultures. Furthermore, I am taking an African American Studies course to broaden my horizons. I also hope to enroll in a study abroad in the future during one of my winter breaks in a Spanish speaking country, so that I may experience a different culture first hand and utilize the Spanish I have learned through four years of education.

Original Inquiry– As research is atypical for an actuary, I plan on accomplishing this goal through advanced coursework and projects through my club, Theme Park Engineering Group. In this club, we work on many elaborate projects such as designing animatronics and braking systems for zip lines. Furthermore, I endeavor to acquire two different minors, in Statistics and Economics to become a more well-rounded and knowledgeable student. To do this, I will take over sixty hours of advanced coursework.

Academic Enrichment– The minors I am choosing to pursue reflect my endeavor to achieve Academic Enrichment. Both Statistics and Economics are relevant to my major, as I will take several courses in each field to acquire my major. However, I wish to take this one step further and become more knowledgeable in these important fields in order to further round-out my education. Also, I plan on enrolling in an extra programming course and Business Finance course so that I have a better understanding of programs I will use in my profession, as well as have more of a business background if I pursue a management position in the future.

Leadership Development– In the future, I intend to pursue a position on the executive board of my Theme Park Engineering Group to become more involved with the planning of events and future projects. I also plan on pursuing internships in my field starting after my sophomore year. Some opportunities that interest me include internships at companies such as Nationwide, or possibly some centered closer to my home in Cincinnati, such as Ohio National or Cincinnati Insurance. I also hope to become involved with the Ohio State University Actuarial Club to learn more about the industry and to meet important people in the field.

Service Engagement– To accomplish this goal, I hope to do a Buck-I-Serv trip in the future. This would give me the opportunity to help others, while also serving as an opportunity to visit a foreign country. I can familiarize myself with another culture, and maybe even utilize my Spanish. Most importantly, I can work with others to improve a community. Also, I hope to use Volunteermatch.org, so that I can become more in touch with the community by finding service opportunities in the area.
