Year in Review

One of the greatest growth’s I have experienced over the past year is my growth as an independent adult and ability to sustain a healthy attitude towards school and life.

In my second year at Ohio State I have made great strides in becoming more involved at Ohio State. I have made many great connections through my scholarly groups and student groups that I have been a part of. This year I was a member of Ohio State’s only show choir, Scarlet Script. I have been made an executive member of the student group ESportsInitiative. As a group we host many gaming groups and raise many for charitable organizations. I have participated in STEP the second year transformational experience program at OSU, along with Green engineering scholars and the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minorities Program. Both of these groups have allowed me to obtain a faculty mentor, both of which have guided me in my second year.

Original Inquiry: My goal was to learn more about the research process at OSU and how to be involved, if not obtain a research position of my own. I have not obtained a position, but I have learned a great deal of how it works here. Before I didn’t even realize that you could take research for credit. This is something I am extremely interested in pursuing.

Leadership Development: My goal for leadership development was to simply become a better leader and to find myself in charge of some sort of position in the classroom or in a student group. I have somewhat accomplished this by becoming a TA for intro to Engineering II for all engineers, and also by being placed into a leadership position in my student group i’m involved in, ESportsInitiative. I got put in charge of running the game Hearthstone for the group, I will be in charge of organizing tournaments and advertising these tournaments, as well as gaining ground in involving more people in the process of streaming our tournaments online.

Career

Although I have no formal intern experience for an Engineering company, I hope to further develop my skills of engineering writing, and other relevant engineering skills. I became an undergraduate Teaching Assistant for the Engineering Education Department by TA’ing for Engineering 1182. This involved many personal interactions between students as well as intensely understanding the Advanced Energy Vehicle project and CAD tools such as SolidWorks and Matlab.

GES Group Presentations

The problem our scholars group investigated was the utilization of genetically modifying trees to replenish trees on our planet. We learned that although it is possible for scientists to engineer plants and organisms like trees to have desirable traits it is not suitable for long term sustainability of forest health. The project really opened my eyes to how GMOs actually operate.  Most people automatically view GMOs as some evil idea although we can utilize them for very beneficial things. I enjoyed experiencing the group dynamic as well.

Intro To Aerospace Engineering Flight Analysis

In AAE 2200 the class had an individual take-home final to analyze the Van’s RV-10 2 seat aircraft. This analysis was done through Matlab and other manual calculations to determine aspects such as the Drag Polar of the aircraft, the power available in the aircraft, the aircraft’s climb performance and the range and endurance of the aircraft from a fully loaded fuel tank. This project provided valuable insight into design parameters of aircraft and how the performance of an aircraft can be analyzed without manually testing the vehicle.

About Me

Self Headshot

My name is Tevon Martinez. I am a second year engineering student at the Ohio State University and my major is Aerospace engineering. It is my second year as a Green Engineering scholar and a Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Scholar. One of my favorite experiences was the FLOW tree planting. Although we didn’t plant any trees I enjoyed the volunteering experience. I am also a member of Ohio States’s only show choir Scarlet Script, it’s extremely enjoyable and a great experience. One day I plan to use my major for satellite communication technology.
