Kayla Marshall

My name is Kayla Marshall and I am a 1st year from Cleveland, Ohio. I am a biology major on a pre-med track here at Ohio State. I wish to go into either pediatrics or neonatology. I enjoy spending time with infants and kids so I believe this would be the perfect occupation for me. More specifically about my background, I live in a suburb in Cleveland called Bedford Heights. My high school that I come from was majority black and lacked the diversity that I feel is essential for a person’s personal development. It was also hard for students like me to get into prestigious universities such as Ohio State. Students like me were told to settle for schools that were easier to get into. This never stopped me from applying to universities that I believed would challenge me through my academic career. Coming from a family of five and being the oldest of three it has been my responsibility to lead by example. I always felt the pressure to get good grades, be involved in school and community events, and take care of my responsibilities around the house.
Going through the college admissions process was one of the most stressful things I have ever gone through in my life. All of the schools I applied to could not compare to Ohio State. It was my dream and the only school that I wanted to attend. Despite being told that I didn’t have high chances of getting in, I still put my all into my application. Receiving my acceptance letter was the most amazing thing that has ever happened to me and I could not have been more proud of myself in that moment.
