Text Review Assignment- Avatar

Avatar was a great movie that had many deep messages embedded in the story. The main character was a young paraplegic Marine who signed up for a mission by the military to explore a world called Pandora. These individuals who were apart of the science aspect were very interested in these people’s culture and how they lived. However, the soldiers of the military were more interested in what they could gain from being with these people, and how they could take their resources. As time progressed, the young man Jake became more and more attached to this group of people and eventually spent majority of his time learning their ways which in the end helped him get over a lot of the struggles he experienced when he lost his legs. In the end, the soldiers called an attack to wipe out the species because they found it no longer important for them to be around. This movie showed that in society, a lot of people view themselves as better then or put themselves on a higher pedestal because of how they look. In addition to others using people to get where they want to be. Throughout the movie, I found it very sad how the military Colonel would do anything possible to get information on these groups of people, as well as just wanting to end their whole group once he got all their resources. However, on a positive not, I saw that this movie showed that no matter how advance or successful you are in life that you can always learn something. Most of all, this information does not always have to be from someone who is more successful than you. Their culture taught humans many key things relating to how to work together as people, to even just taking care of the earth. This film truly showed intercultural encounters as well as many injustices that went on because of how individuals looked, instead of how they were as people.

Diary of Systemic Injustices Showcase – Systemic Racism In Lower Income Communities In Columbus, OH

In August of 2020, Columbus Ohio came out with an article that stated there has always been a gap in the black and white communities. Two major examples were between Hilltop which was a predominantly black area, and Upper Arlington which was majority white. Like usual these black communities are not given the same number of resources and result in a lack of quality education. Mainly because school funding comes from how high or low the property taxes are. This disadvantage can have a large effect on young kids getting involved in gang activity. These activities can lead to the death of many minorities or being incarcerated with possible felony charges. Sadly, these charges do not only come with lengthy sentences, but once these individuals are released its hard for them to get hired for certain jobs. To add on to these problems, being from low income back grounds lead to lower graduation rates and lower chances of smart lifestyle decisions. These factors are not only something that affects these people, but it also has an affect on their future generations of family. Also, these individuals are not able to get access to healthy food and get the necessary medical treatment if needed. Without proper nourishment, it is even harder for a child to focus on a task when all they can think about is getting money for their next meal. All these lacks of resources have a major impact on how someone will act, learn, and be able to be successful in society. In this article, it discusses how the future generations have an impact on our society now. It is important that we continue to “sign petitions, donating to bail fund, educating yourself on current events, and sharing information on social media”. Half the battle is just being willing to not just sit back and allow things to happen because it might not affect you. In these communities, there are plenty of wise and bright people who have the chance if given the opportunities, to do great things in the world. If we continue to let this gap grow, we will never be able to help each inner city and low-income areas educate and motivate their children that it is possible for anyone to be successful no matter your background.
