Allegheny monkeyflower is a perennial herb of wet sites that flowers in mid-summer. It has broadly lance-shaped leaves that are opposite in arrangement and nearly stalkless (sessile).

The flowers are lavender, about 1.5 cm across, bilaterally symmetrical, and have fused petals. They are borne on stalks (pedicels) that are about 1.5 cm long.
