Butterflyweed is a low-growing brilliantly orange-flowered Asclepias that lacks the miky sap produced by our other members of the milkweed genus.

One of the many peculiar aspects of milkweed flowers is that their petals are formed into bowl-like “hoods” that are filled with nectar that is avidely sought by a great bariety of insects.
