YELLOW-FLOWERED MEMBERS
OF THE ASTER FAMILY
The aster family is peculiar in that what looks from a distance like an individual flower is actually a head-like cluster of several to many tiny flowers. Often the flowers at the periphery of the heads are strap-shaped “rays,” resembling petals. Sometimes either the ray flowers or the central disk flowers are absent. The aster family is one of the most species-rich plant families in Ohio. Since it has a tendency to flower late in the season, the aster family dominates the Ohio State Marion Prairie at this time.
