Year in Review: Sophomore Year

Update on G.O.A.L.S.

  1. Global Awareness: Through my sociology courses I have started to glean a more large scale understanding of the society. With so many valuable insights in this field I’ve decided to go for a sociology minor. I also have begun to look for new cultural experiences outside of my own. I may not have any plans to study abroad, but taking more adventures and going out of my way to enjoy other cultures is definitely on my agenda.
  2. Original Inquiry: I’ve just gotten started in a cognitive development research lab. It’s been great to see the fluid changes that happen throughout the research process when before I thought it would be so rigid and dull. I plan to get even more involved with this lab to get a larger understanding of what other projects are going on in the lab. I also plan to try a social psychology lab course in the coming years.
  3. Academic Enrichment: My honors contract demonstrates a commitment to following a set path of courses to build a well rounded education for myself. The majority of my courses are rooted in Psychology, Sociology, and Anthropology. This follows my interest in understanding humans on a larger scale.
  4. Leadership Development: I’ve been starting to take on more leadership roles at work, from training new employees to managing small groups of people in unique situations. I’ve seen developments in effective time management in getting assignments and objectives in a timely manner. I’m hoping these time management skills will carry through to help me in graduate school.
  5. Service Engagement: I’ve recently been fortunate enough to join the Boo Radley Society! This has given me many opportunities to spread positivity and kindness on a larger scale to students and faculty on campus. I plan to stay involved with the group all the way through senior year.

G.O.A.L.S.

In regards to Global Awareness, I hope to develop my cultural awareness. Being surrounded by people of different backgrounds here at OSU, I can better learn to see things from other perspectives. Some sociology classes will help me see how different culture influences people’s behaviors in different ways. I also plan to use my time here to learn (through economics classes) how the global economy changes in relation to different more local economies. I also plan to start staying up to date on international news, something I haven’t been as up-to-date on until recently. Global Awareness will help me be as understanding as possible to people of all backgrounds.

I plan to develop Original Inquiries by getting involved with research in the upcoming years. Finding unanswered questions and working to find answers will be a great experience for me. Even simply doing research for essays to formulate new opinions and standpoints will be great practice. This will all be useful so I can find unique solutions in all parts of my life. I’m sure I will be able to contribute no matter where I go if I have strong original inquiry.

While I’m here at OSU, my Academic Enrichment will be invaluable for developing a wide breadth of knowledge. Being able to look at situations through different academic perspectives and contexts will be extremely useful in everything I do. Part of my own enrichment will come from a variety of classes, ranging from topics like the economy to philosophy. My academic plan has helped me make sure I will be well prepared for a job in clinical psychology. Helping others requires you to understand all external influences on a person, ranging from internal issues and family dynamics, to social pressures and economic struggles. The world is rarely black and white, so being able to look at complex topics in a variety of ways will help me understand the world in greater ways.

Leadership is a skill that is crucial to me, as my future is centered around leading individuals to healthier and more stable lives. I hope to develop this through my personal relations while on campus, with friends and acquaintances. I will also get more involved in the clubs I am currently in, to better learn how to organize and bring groups together. At work as well, in my time here I hope to develop my leadership abilities hopefully to the point I can be a student manager. If I go to graduate school here, I could have plenty of time to do so there.  Being able to lead others is important, but even more so will be knowing the right direction to lead them towards.

Being more engaged with Service will be an important change for me. I have done a lot of service in the past, but very little of it came from an internal drive to do so. While I’m here I plan to work to find motivation within me to actively be involved with service. There are countless organizations that focus on this, so I have no doubt I will find somewhere that fits me. I am most driven to one-on-one service, like tutoring and counseling, so I have a a few places I hope to get involved with my 2nd year with those. Service Engagement is an important habit that I hope to make consistent in my life going forward.

About Me

My name is Jack, I am a psychology major with plans of earning a Master’s degree and eventually a PsyD so I can pursue my dream of becoming a clinical psychologist. My drive for learning in this field comes from both fascination with the human psyche and being face to face with numerous conflicts and mental illnesses throughout my life. I hope to use as many resources as possible at OSU so that I can gain the knowledge needed to help others with their struggles. Outside of my academic pursuits I enjoy both listening to and performing music (especially punk rock), playing video games, and making sketches. My dream job would be therapy involving any of these hobbies.
