Year in Review

GLOBAL AWARENESS

This year has been one of many adventures and trying to discover exactly who I want to be. My main goal in coming to OSU was to learn more about other cultures and the world around me. I got the opportunity to travel to the Czech Republic for a month and explore a country much different than my own. That was probably one of my greatest experiences of my time at Ohio State because I got to immerse myself into a different culture and try to understand a different lifestyle when I didn’t even know the language. I was a little nervous at first because I would be on my own, truly on my own, for the first time in my life but I am so grateful for the opportunity because it forced me to grow and discover myself a little more. This May I will be heading to Australia and I hope it will help me to understand the world a bit more and give me a new perspective.

ORIGINAL INQUIRY

Although I have not been involved in research yet, I have recently been inspired by my history of HIV class (MICROBIO 3704) I am currently taking to maybe pursue research in a topic that I had not considered before. I am a zoology major with a pre-veterinary path but this class has made me passionate about advocacy and treatment of HIV and AIDS in developing countries. There is a study abroad opportunity associated with this class that I would love to go on eventually but I also want to figure out a way to research here in order to bring awareness to the importance (and lack of) treatment of HIV in countries with a high prevalence of the virus.

ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT

I knew long before coming to Ohio State that I wanted to be a veterinarian and that alone has inspired me to do well in my classes and select a curriculum that not only challenges me, but will better prepare me for my future career. It has been very difficult and at times I have felt like giving up but then I remember why I am here and how far I’ve come and it helps me to go on. I really do enjoy learning and have also tried to select my GE’s to better enrich my knowledge and touch on my other passions that I don’t exactly get to explore within my major.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

I’m currently in a Human and Animal Interactions Club that I wish I could be involved in more but my job got in the way a little bit this year. I work as an instructor for little kids a Wendy’s Gymnastics and Fitness for Children which I really love because it gives me a break from the regular day-to-day stresses of classes and studying. I love working with kids and they are always so happy to be there so it really is relaxing and reminds me to be more optimistic. Next year, I will begin shadowing a veterinarian during the week as well as working, and I hope I will have enough time to get involved in other clubs around campus.

SERVICE ENGAGEMENT

I have been a part of a lot of service-oriented projects including the Best Buddies Organization, Autism Speaks, and volunteering at animal shelters. I hope to get involved with more service projects, especially ones like Buckeyeserve that will allow me to volunteer overseas. Next summer I will also be volunteering in Cambodia at an elephant sanctuary through Reach Out Volunteers which is involved through campus.
