Professional Development Series coming in May!

In lieu of our annual Professional Development Day, we have modified for a virtual series for 2021. Please join us for the following sessions!

Tuesday, May 4th from 9-10 am

Presenter: Ret. Col. Terry Klinker, Senior Lecturer in Management Sciences, Fisher College of Business

Title: Leadership: Influence v. Position

Description: Just because someone is promoted or hired into a leadership position, doesn’t mean they are someone who can influence others to carry out a vision.  Ralph Nader states, “A leader has the vision and conviction that a dream can be achieved. They inspire the power and energy to get it done.”

What is positional influence?  Positional influence is the power or influence that is tied to a title or position.  It carries only as much influence as the position carries, but it doesn’t mean that the person with the title has the ability to influence. In short, positional leadership alone is very limited.

It takes more than just being in a position of influence to get something done.  A leader must be able to influence others. They must get them inspired about getting something done.  You can be in a position of power, but if you are not able to help others catch the vision and motivate them to get there with you, you are merely in a position without any real influence.

One of the most difficult realities to learn as a young leader, or as an ego-centric, is that leaders rely on those around them to lift them to success.  We will discuss the implications of this philosophy as it pertains to business operations, military operations, and interpersonal relationships.
