Year 2 in Review

Being a member of Dunn Sports and Wellness scholars has enriched my experience at Ohio State so much; it has brought so many amazing experiences to me that I would not have had without this program. I am currently working in Rec Sports as a scorekeeper for intramural basketball. This is something that I think I probably would not have been involved in if it wasn’t for DSWS. We have had speakers from rec sports, and a lot of the second and third years worked in rec sports, so it made it so much easier for me to pursue a job there. I was encouraged by supervisors and other fellow DSWS-ers to get involved in rec sports, and it has been a really good experience so far that I think I would not have applied for the job. I think DSWS has really allowed me to grow professionally and in my leadership skills. Being on leadership council, has taught me a lot of valuable things about planning enriching events for members, participating in productive meetings, and being a leader for our scholars program. I feel overall much more knowledgeable about the way the events run and are led. This leadership position pushed me out of my comfort zone as I am not generally a very outgoing person. It forced me to voice my opinion more and share my thoughts or praises of other’s ideas; it really helped me come out of my shell. Along with being a part of a leadership council, the professional development meeting taught me a lot about how to carry myself as a professional individual. I think this has prepared me for future instances where I need to dress and act professionally, such as job and graduate school interviews. From all of these experiences, I have developed in maturity, confidence, and self-identity. I have more confidence in expressing my ideas, leading a group, and collaborating with others to better my ideas.

A big life-lesson I have taken away from my experience in DSWS is the importance of people and investing in people. Mike Dunn showed us how much you can impact others by reaching out and putting energy into other people. DSWS has become a family for me and it has given me my best friends and roommates, and I know I will carry this idea with me for the rest of my life. I will always make an effort to invest and support others because of my experience in DSWS.

This picture is from when we went on an awesome trip to Hocking Hills and I had an amazing time with my roommates and other DSWS friends.

Year in Review

The first weekend at Ohio State was probably the most memorable from first semester. That weekend we were grouped into our “families” which consisted of three sophomore “parents” and about five freshmen. It was great because it gave you an immediate connection to your fellow scholars, including the parents. We competed in a bunch of activities ranging from soccer to relay races to poster making. The sense of community it gave me took away a lot of my nerves surrounding my first year here and making friends and finding my place on such a big campus. Something that really stuck out to me was how great of friends all the second years were; it relaxed me and made me so excited to be a part of what they all had. One of the first nights, we went to the ARC and competed in a bunch of games with our families against other families. It helped build a sense of community within us even in the first two nights of knowing each other. There was soccer, giant jenga, spike ball, kan jam, volleyball, three-legged races, and even though it was late and we had had a long day, everyone was energetic and engaging that we didn’t want to leave. I got to know a lot of sophomores and freshmen that I am still friends with now, so I really appreciated how connected us with not only newcomers like us but also people who have already been through what we were about to go through. It was competitive and fun and built community and set a great tone for me for what my college experience could be like.

Artifacts

Although it would be hard to represent that experience through just one object, I think the Dunn Sport and Wellness shirt that we received the first weekend would be representative of what was experienced that first weekend. All of the first years received a gray scholars t-shirt at the end of the first weekend; the second year scholars received the same shirt except it was in black. One of the big components of that experience was that the first and second years came together to provide support and community for one another. Having the same shirt is something that brings us together; we are all Dunn Sports and Wellness scholars; we all represent Ohio State and the beliefs and values of Mike Dunn; however, we are all a little different too. The second years add a dynamic to the community that I think is really valuable; they can be mentors and advisers to us since they have already completed freshman year. They showed us the ins and outs of campus and gave us tips on how to be successful, and even though they built a mentor-mentored relationship, there was also strong friendship created. We could be friends and scholarly peers at the same time, and they have made such a difference in my first year. The first weekend when we all hung out and participated in multiple activities I could see those relationships forming almost immediately. I think the scholar t-shirts represent this well because having the same t-shirt shows that we are all one united community that share similar values, beliefs, and goals. The difference in color in the t-shirts shows that we are an inter generational group and has its differences but the differences only enhance the relationships.

About Me

Hi! I’m Emily; I’m originally from Pittsburgh, PA and I moved to Cincinnati, OH right before high school. I started playing volleyball in fourth grade and stuck with it for the next 8 years; it has had a large influence on my life and has helped development my work ethic and leadership style. Another passion of mine is science; science was always my favorite subject in school; both of my parents were biologists so it’s pretty much in my genes. I am majoring in Health Sciences and am on a pre-PA track since I hope to attend Physician Assistant graduate school after my four years here. I’m the third child; I have two brothers and one sister, and we’re all pretty close. My family is tight knit and we like to spend time together either camping or at the beach. I’m obsessed with my dog, Max, he’s a Pekingese Poodle and I truly don’t know what I’m going to do without him by my side in college. I have met a lot of good friends through the Dunn Sports and Wellness Scholars; being apart of that community connected me to a lot of people that share my similar interests, and we have all become close.
