PSL November Question

A major topic of debate today is the fairness of redistricting and congressional representation. At the moment, states’ populations are not proportional to the number of congressional representatives they have in the house, and thus, electoral votes are not equal among the states by population. For example, states with a single representative, such as Delaware, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Vermont, only receive one electoral college vote for their entire population although it is not representative of their population size. This problem is way presidential candidates, such as Donald Trump, may win the electoral vote but lose the population vote and still become the presidential elect. Congressional representation is therefore NOT representative. States with fewer people per representative hold more voting power than states with more people per representative. One solution to this problem would be to set a standard number of people per representative among every state. This way, voting power is equal to each electorate as they represent the same number of votes. Also, more frequent censuses should be conducted in the United States to ensure that the congressional representation is proportional to the constantly changing population of each state.

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

With my time here at the Ohio State University, I plan to fully enrich myself in any and all of the opportunities provided to me. By doing so, I hope to grow as an individual and to gain a new more diverse perspective.

  • Columbus is a much more culturally, politically, and ethnically diverse area than where I am from. Concerning global awareness, I hope to engage in the many different ideas and practices that are going on around me. I would love to attend a service for a religion I am not associated with myself; I believe I would learn so much about those around me by becoming involved in their daily rituals. I would also like to spend more time listening to the many different ideas, thoughts, and concerns of those around me. By doing these things, I hope to grow in my perspective of those around me
  • My plans for Original Inquiry are hopefully to assist with research within my Psychology major, or to even possibly conduct my own original research sometime while at OSU. I may even consider doing research in another field should I choose to double major.
  • Academic Enrichment is a huge priority to me. I just recently switched my preprofessional program to pre-law. In correspondence with this, I recently applied, interviewed, and received and internship working for local politician Richard Brown. What I learn and see while interning for Assistant Minority Whip Richard Brown may show me more about the political process and open my eyes to future career opportunities within the field.
  • In terms of leadership development, I have recently joined the Undergraduate Student Government at Ohio State. I am interested in working within the Health and Safety Department of the organization. Hopefully, within the next few semesters, I can take on different and more challenges roles within the organization.
  • Concerning service engagement, I just applied to train and volunteer for SARNCO, the Sexual Assault Response Network of Central Ohio. In the winter, I plan to take the training courses required to become a volunteer for the organization. In the meantime, I am planning to get involved with The Buckeye Food Alliance and other service programs through the university.

PSL Mentor Interview

My peer mentor is Clara Hatch, who is a very vibrant individual. She coincidentally lived in the same dorm room that I live in this year, as all PSLers are Smith-Steeb residence their first year. I had a great time exploring German Village with her the first Sunday we were on campus, but I got to learn a lot more about her this time together. Clara is studying Public Affairs and is a diehard John Glenn fan. Clara is enjoying her classes this semester as well as spending time with other students in the college of John. She is also a very outdoorsy person, having spent her summer in Yellowstone National Park and also being a member of the Parks and Rec Club here at OSU. Her favorite dining location on campus is Kcomm (Kennedy Commons) because she thinks it’s more intimate than Traditions at Scott. Clara works as a Page at the Ohio Statehouse and loves the bow tie she gets to wear on the job. She has tried several times to convince me to join her for the 24 hour Groundhogs Day movie marathon, but I think it will take more convincing for me to sit through that movie 12 times in a row (although she does say it’s very fun). Overall, I am very grateful for all of the honest and helpful advice Clara has been able to give me during these first few weeks. I am very excited to get to know her better throughout the year.

About Me

Hi, my name is Cameron Malott, but most people call me Cami. I am from Cincinnati, Ohio, and although I am a huge Skyline Chili fan, I am very excited to now be living in Columbus. I am currently majoring in Psychology at The Ohio State University on a pre-law professional track. I am also in the Politics, Society, and Law Scholars Program at OSU. While living in the State’s capitol, I intend to take full advantage of the political atmosphere here. Hopefully, living in Columbus will teach me more about local government and legislation, two topics that interest me. Fun fact: I have a twin sister, but we look and act absolutely nothing alike.
