Concept Statement

This dynamic composition reflects different sounds and feelings both found in and brought on by the song, ‘Morning Moon,’ a low-fi piece with jazz influence. Harmony and contrast are dominant in the composition as a way to convey the relaxing and rhythmic song. Harmony is present through a cohesive color story amongst the different parts of the triptych and a continuous flow of both real and implied curvilinear lines meant to move at the same time and provide a sense of continuity or flow. These things are used to mimic the slow and smooth underlying beat found in ‘Morning Moon’ and a ringing constant note present in the song that provides a sense of anticipation or tension. Contrast is also a dominant principle in this piece of work as a way to portray the fore mentioned subtle tension through the use of complementary colors yellow and purple. The mechanism itself provides movement in response to flowing lines.

Production:

First my group worked together to find our song, “Morning Moon” by Kansan, Wishes and Dreams. Then we created a large collaborative mind map to narrow down our goals and objectives.

After mind mapping and working through iterations, my group made a sketch of what we hoped our combined projects would look like.

Sketch of project layout

Next, I made a sketch for my section of the project.

Sketch of my section

After sketching out a version of my section, I began constructing a model.

Construction of first model

I attempted to construct it using a pull tab mechanism nut ultimately realized the lines I wanted to have were too curvy for the mechanism I was using. In adjusting my plan I intended to make one large pull tab to change the colors in the blank space, but found that to be too cumbersome of a mechanism, so I decided to do a slider mechanism instead.

I made a new model using grey scale paper to practice and used brads for my slider.

Paper slider prototype

The slider mechanisms in the above protype kept getting stuck in ways I struggled to remedy, so for my final product, I removed the back most layer of paper in order to decrease friction and give me easy access.

Final mechanism in it’s beginning stage.
