Semester in Review

The first semester of my first year is now over. It was a tough transition in the beginning. First time living away from my family, forming brand new relationships,  getting my first job, and walking everywhere instead of driving. I was home sick during the beginning but living in a residence hall was the best solution to this problem because every student was going through the same thing. I went home every time I got the chance. The thing is now that even though I am used to it, I still have found myself going home a lot but the reasoning has changed. I now go home for my parents and my siblings instead of myself. I want to show my three younger siblings that even once you move away you still need to come back and be there with the people that raised you and show them you haven’t forgotten them. When it comes to academics, I am still working just as hard as I was in high school and have involved myself in many other organizations and programs to get my name out. After my first semester, I can’t see myself at any other university.

Artifacts

My First Artifact that I want to share is my MBTI personality type. I decided that this would be my first artifact because they have helped me put my personality in words and helped understand it better. I liked knowing that the personality traits I carry are also prevalent in other people and we might have more in common with someone than we think. Hearing someones personality type helps you understand more about the person. For example Martin Luther King Jr., and Barack Obama are ENFJ’s , and through those letters I know more about the personality of them without ever having the chance to meet them. MBTI letters are something everyone should know about themselves.

My Second Artifact is the book The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. This book is now one of my favorites of all time. While reading this book, I felt like I had been placed in it and that the world of Amir was also mine. I grew up very secluded from the outside world. I would hear things in the news, and then later forget about it. This book, being as real as it was for me, showed me that there are people that live completely different lives. It also crushed the stereotypes and prejudices we as Americans have grown up hearing from the media. Afghanistan is a place that was beautiful and developing and now terrible people have turned it into a dangerous war zone and have kicked people out of their homes. This book played a part in me deciding that I want to do Doctors Without Borders in the future and help families and children that haven’t been as blessed as I have.

My parents are my drive for everything I do. They have raised me to be independent and confident in what I believe. I am who I am because of them. They balance my Type A/ perfectionist attitude and remind me to stay calm and relax once in a while. They have never stopped me from pursuing anything because they have always trusted to me to make good decisions, to be a good example for my three younger siblings.

About Me

Hi, my name is Ghafeera Malik and I’m from Mason, Ohio. My favorite thing to do if given any free time is read. I love every genre but fiction is what I tend to gravitate towards. I’m majoring in Biology and minoring in Political Science. I want to help people that don’t have access to medicine and good healthcare. Researching the opiod crisis and what the government and its citizens can do to help is a topic I have great interest in. I want to make a difference in this world and go knowing I saved lives and increased the standard of living.

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

G.O.A.L.S

Global Awareness: This to me means educating yourself on the the unique differences that everyone has and respecting everyone regardless of what their individual circumstances are. I am trying my best to not judge other people and not form prejudices about people before I get the chance to meet them. Volunteering at Clintonville Beechwold has forced me to interact with a group of people that I have never once before had the opportunity to interact with. Most of them have been raised completely opposite of the ways that I have, some of them made one mistake that they are still paying back for because no one has given them a second chance.

Original Inquiry: Doing research and furthering experiences in the area that one plans to go into. I have been trying to get involved in research but in order to expand my knowledge about the field that I plan on going into I have been helping out at different hospitals here in Columbus and back home in Cincinnati.

Academic Enrichment: Now this has been the hardest of all of these to maintain. The courses I am in are very rigorous and demand hours of work outside of class as I am sure many other majors also face. It is not at all easy and one needs to stay on top of course work, not miss classes, study with people and not be afraid to ask questions. The last one probably the hardest to do in a 600 people lecture such as Biology but is necessary for understanding the material.

Leadership Development: Being a leader doesn’t necessarily mean having a role of power but many students are leaders in a classroom and outside of one. I consider myself a good one but with still a lot to go. A leader gets people to talk and voice their opinions, doesn’t leave anyone out. They respect others and listen to learn the other person’s side not listening to respond or listen just to wait for their turn to speak.

Service Engagement: Being a part of Mount Leadership Society Scholars this is probably the biggest one for all of us. Service and helping other people is a major part of my life and I have been doing it for as long as I can remember. Just start small and help out wherever and whenever you can. Growing up blessed and going to such a great school, it is our duty to help people that have not been as blessed in their life.

Career

I am going into a career of helping people. I have been volunteering at hospitals, libraries and food pantries since middle school. I have sat and talked to people from all types of different backgrounds. I have been so blessed as to help translate different languages at hospitals for families. I have gotten the privilege to shadow Dr. Amy Rushing, a fantastic trauma surgeon, at the Wexner Medical Center. Patient care in hospitals is what I have been doing for the last 4-5 years. Whether it was at Wexner Medical Center, Cincinnati  Children’s, or UC West Chester Hospital. I have learned a lot and gained an immense amount of sympathy for people. I plan to take all of this knowledge with me abroad this summer and continue to gain knowledge about the medical system everywhere as I grow and evolve in the medical field.
