Honors G.O.A.L.S.

For global awareness, I would like to accomplish this goal both in and outside the classroom. Inside the classroom, I will be taking two Spanish courses, and will take a GE class that studies another culture or time period (don’t know exactly which yet). If I can’t find a volunteering job at a hospital or clinic, I will join the Hindu Youth club, which does community service. Also, while it may not fit this category exactly, I travel to India once very few years to see family. As hard and time consuming the college years can be, it would be amazing to be able to go there a few times during college, as being in an entirely different country will lead to the appreciation diversity as much as anything else.

Original inquiry is a goal that for me, will be best realized by doing research. Obviously doing research is very important for a student in a science major. I believe doing research will allow me to better understand not only science but the process of science, proposing hypotheses and going through the process of accepting or rejecting them. It would be a great experience as it is more about application than just learning material. TO get started I want to find a research project another professor is doing and help out. After that, I would like to do my own research either through an OSU course, or just on my own (on a subject relating to exercise science or sports performance).

Academic enrichment is obviously very important, as that is one of the major goals I had in mind when I decided to apply to the honors program. My main goal is to get into medical school after college, and my favorite subject in high school relating to that was biology. I chose biology as my major because I enjoy it and felt that it will help me achieve my goal of making it into medical school. The ultimate goal for me is to become a doctor in a sports medicine hospital, which is why I want to pursue a focus in exercise science (since there is no minor for it) as well while I’m an undergraduate.

Leadership development is one of the goals that I need to focus the most on. Through internships, volunteering jobs, and participation in classes, I think I could become better in this area. My leadership style is generally to make sure everyone knows they are an equal part of a team, and their contributions are valued as such. I believe this is the best style because groups work better when everybody feels good about their ability to contribute, and is more likely to achieve success. I don’t believe in letting one or a few people shoulder the load, even if it produces faster results.

When it comes to service engagement, I have volunteered at COSI (nearby science center here in Columbus) for 500 hours, where I help teach children science in a hands-on manner. I’m no longer doing that, so it is important I find a new volunteering opportunity, hopefully at a hospital, and it would really be awesome if I could get a volunteering job at OSU’s sports medicine rehabilitation at the RPAC, or  just any sports medicine hospital. I plan on doing this, and finding a club that helps me do community service to  help those who need it.
