Current Event Catch Up III Reflection

The event that I attended for this month’s e-portfolio entry was the Current Event Catch Up III which was hosted by Samantha Zimmerman on November 15th at 7PM on Zoom.  In this event, Sam discussed international issues that people might not see in the news.  Some of the issues covered in the video were Hurricanes in Latin America, The Festival of Lights celebration observed by multiple religions worldwide, Turkmenistan’s Golden Dog, and Unemployment claims around the world as a result of COVID-19.

I really enjoyed the story about Turkmenistan’s golden dog because It was one of those feel-good stories that you don’t normally see in the news.  It’s almost humorous that in the face of a national pandemic where most stories are bleak, a story about a statue of a giant golden dog helps bring a smile to my face; I bet many others too.  I also learned that dogs are put on a podium in Turkmenistan and are treated nearly on the same level as humans, something not common in other countries.

Overall, I’ve always enjoyed these current even catch up events because they keep me informed with international news that I otherwise don’t keep up with regularly.  Sam does a great job finding interesting stories and keeping my attention throughout the entire event.

Current Event Catch Up

The International Affairs event that I attended recently was the Current Event Catch Up on Sunday October 26 at 7PM on Zoom.  This event was hosted by one of my colleagues, Samantha Zimmerman.  Samantha did a great job catching us all up on what has been happening across the globe over the past few weeks and put together a solid presentation.

Personally, I do not do enough to keep myself updated on what is going on around the globe, so I really gained a lot of information out of this event.  More specifically, I was given much more information on the protests going on in Nigeria and the story behind the #endSARS movement.  This knowledge has motivated me to keep myself updated on the news more and to not fall behind on current events as often as I do.

This event has everything to do with International Affairs because that was the primary focus on the news.  Instead of making domestic news the emphasis, Samantha took the time to focus on events happening across the globe and how we, as citizens of the United States can do our part to help out.  In conclusion, I am very happy I attended this event because I learned much more than I thought I would.

Lectures in Musicology

The first event that I attended this semester for International Affairs was called Lectures in Musicology: Alex E. Chaves – Verses and Flows: Migrant Lives and the Sounds of Crossing on September 28, 2020.  This event was an academic event and it was held on zoom.  During this event, Alex Chaves played us many different clips from songs all around South America and different parts of the world.  I thought it was really interesting but it didn’t have a major impact on me due to the fact that I never took deep interest in international music and its origins, for me music is all about how it sounds, not where it comes from.

This event relates to the topic of International affairs due to the fact that it was centered around of Latin/international origin.  I gained a lot of knowledge from the event and a lot of information about Latin heritage and learned a lot about their music which I thoroughly enjoyed.  This event does not relate to any other topics covered in my other courses which I really enjoy due to the fact that my other courses cover very specific topics related to the business world, while this event was a real breath of fresh air and was a complete change of pace from other things I am learning.  Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the event and am very glad that I attended it and learned more about Latin music and heritage.
