The main systemic injustice going on around the world right now that comes to mind for me is everything revolving around the Black Lives Matter movement, especially after the incidence and death of George Floyd.
I think there are multiple parts and issues to addressed withing the movement but something that really sparked it was police brutality. I honestly believe that everyone has witnessed this phenomenon either on tv or firsthand in their own life. The Black Lives Matter got tons of news coverage mid last year and I think it brought to light for many people the issue many black individuals face every day.
As we have learned through this course by de Beauvoir, we often can see times of “othering.” Usually someone deemed inferior is labeled the other and this case that is the black community. I think that after so many INNOCENT black people had been killed at the hands of people who had sworn to protect them and their community, enough had been enough. This caused the rise of massive protests around the world. Which leads me into what makes this systemic. This hasn’t happened a couple times. Police brutality has been going on for longer than there has been a word for it. What makes this systemic, is the systems that have been set in place to hold back this minority and make this brutality acceptable to some. This is why often time we see police go unpunished for their violence against the black community.
I think for the wrong to be righted, the training of cops would have to be changed and they would need to be held more accountable for the actions they have. I also believe that we can stop the problem before it even occurs but donating more to schools, investing in social workers, etc. rather than giving more money to police departments for more weapons. I am including a link to the website Vera Institute of Justice that offers information on how we can help stop police violence as well as statistics around the issue.

Hello I found your diary of systemic injustice post to be very interesting and insightful. I agree with the way that you related the Black Lives Matter movement to de Beauvoir’s theory on the concept of the other. The death of George Floyd has definitely brought a lot of coverage and media to the Black Lives Matter movement. It made a lot of these injustices more well known.
I have seen many instances of police brutality and other harmful acts in the news. I also believe that lots needs to be changed and the police system needs to be completely reformed in order for equality and the ending of violence. I think this is a great example of “othering” because in this case black individuals are being treated as lesser and police officers can be considered the “one”
Personally, I have not experienced any police brutality however, I have seen countless cases of it in the news. There are many similarities between what we have talked about this semester and police brutality but your example of “Othering” is a great way to look at this situation.
Hi! I think you did a great job on your post. A prime example of “Othering” is race and the Black Lives Matter Movement is no different, same to how we discussed “Othering” during the Civil Rights Movement. The Black Lives Matter movement has revealed the many systematic injustices within the police system and police brutality. Again great post and thanks for sharing the link from Vera Institute of Justice on how we can do more to end police brutality.
Hi I found your post both good and informative. I think you made some good points and the connection you made to Beauvoir´s theory of “othering” made a lot of sense. I also wrote about police brutality in my journal and it´s definitely something that needs to end. Too many lives has been lost due to police brutality and with all the demonstrations going on in the world I think we are making a really strong statement. Thanks for sharing
Hi! In this article, a specific case and some social situations are used to prove some unequal treatment suffered by blacks. I think racial discrimination is the most common Systemic Injustice, because it represents the situation faced by a nation or a large group. At the same time, beauvoir’s theory of “othering” can help students think more deeply about how this social situation came into being. Good job!
Hello I thought your post was put together very well. I agree with you that the recent Black Lives Matter issue is a good example of “othering”. It is very unfortunate that a certain group of people feel unsafe especially under the hands of people who are supposed to protect them. I think the movement has caused a lot of improvements however there are still things that need to be improved to truly protect all people.
