ENGR 1182.03 Final Project

Over spring semester, one of the core classes of engineering requires you to make a final project and our class was assigned to make a “Lab-on-a-Chip” which is essentially a portable detection device that is used to detect cancer, chemicals, etc. The picture shown is our final product and it is taken in the negative to make it look more cool! This experience has improved my teamwork and communication skills  and the after the final product was created, it felt amazing to be able to use it after hours of concepts, designing, and planning.

The Denman forum is held every year where students from every discipline/major present their research that they had been working on over the year and judges analyze and choose the best research posters for that year in their current discipline. This year I attended the Denman forum to explore options in choosing a topic in which I could research and it was an enlightening experience as to what students, primarily undergrad, can research. Moreover, it exposed me to other disciplines and what they could potentially be doing as this past year has been very engineering focused to me as a student. Although much of the material that was being research was way over my head, it is paramount for a student in university to be aware of the research being done in their field.

OSU LAN

OSU LAN event

LAN

This artifact from my first semester here at OSU encompasses me as I try and branch out to meet new people and make new connections. This event was a LAN (local group of people wanting to play games) and despite the event not being focused on academics specifically, I was able to meet and make connections with quite a few students. I’m seen in the corner of the photo as my friend took the picture with the intention on trying to capture the whole event as it was quite interesting to see students who are usually introverted get excited and socialize with others. Additionally, I was able to see my old friends and catch up with them so the overall experience was quite nice and entertaining.

UN Millennium Goals Project

picture

This artifact is a group presentation about the UN Millennium Goal of reducing child mortality with an emphasis of the situation in Eastern Asia that is supposed to be met in 2015. The project’s purpose was to broaden our point of views of the world’s conflicts/issues by excavating sources that may not be “mainstream” in the United States or the West. Moreover, the project is meant to establish communication skills between randomly chosen people to simulate a real-world situation/project in which you may not always have the choice of choosing your friends. Personally, the UN Millennium Goals projects presented by our group and other groups have informed me of many present conflicts and problems that must be dealt with in order to advance as globalization has allowed a plethora of governments/cultures/communities to reconcile and begin aiding one another in order to better the world as we know it.

Year in Review (AU15 – SP16)

Over the past year, I have grown as a student but more importantly, as a person. That sounds really cliché but it’s true, as I have found myself on my own, no parents to depend on, I have had to fend for myself in a sense which has increased how outgoing I am and my discipline when being assigned a task. College is different than high school, too different I would say, in a sense where you are now accountable for every decision that you make. Didn’t get the grade you wanted? That’s unfortunate, maybe you should have gone to class instead of binge watching a whole series on Netflix. I love college, the freedom you feel and have is outstanding when compared to one’s previous eighteen years, but the freedom can be overwhelming at times. I look forward to my Sophomore year and how I develop as a person and whether I can finally curb the need to do something other than studying when I need to study!

G.O.A.L.S.

[ “G.O.A.L.S.” is a place where students write about how their planned, current, and future activities may fit into the Honors & Scholars G.O.A.L.S.: Global Awareness, Original Inquiry, Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development, and Service Engagement. For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Delete these instructions and add your own post.

Global Awareness: Students cultivate and develop their appreciation for diversity and each individual’s unique differences. For example, consider course work, study abroad, involvement in cultural organizations or activities, etc .
Original Inquiry: Honors & Scholars students understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community. For example, consider research, creative productions or performances, advanced course work, etc.
Academic Enrichment: Honors & Scholars students pursue academic excellence through rigorous curricular experiences beyond the university norm both in and out of the classroom.
Leadership Development: Honors & Scholars students develop leadership skills that can be demonstrated in the classroom, in the community, in their co-curricular activities, and in their future roles in society.
Service Engagement: Honors & Scholars students commit to service to the community.]

About Me

Great view

Great view from the coast of Algeria!

The name’s Mahdi, Haroune Mahdi, graduated in 2015 from Dublin Coffman High School, located in Ohio, as the first person of my family to graduate from a high school in the United States and transition into higher education. I suppose this is where I would explain my hopes and dreams in hopes that my dreams would actually come true but this is not how I conduct business. That being said, I am a doer, and perhaps a little bit of a dreamer, too. I wish for what any decent human being wishes for, the world to become a better place, new technologies, new cultures, new horizons, new, new, new. However, these wishes are but mere whispers in the wind; the yearning of mankind for pushing the boundaries of the known into the unknown would go unnoticed if not for the doers. If this philosophy is adopted by many more people, the world would be a different place, more politically, economically, and socially stable not to mention technologically. Unfortunately, it is quite the challenge to encompass your life style with such a practice and even I have trouble incorporating it to my thinking in every situation. Additionally, one of my goals is to visit as many countries with as many different cultures as possible before I am unable to do so. Alas, I have been overseas many times but it is to visit my country of origin, Algeria, and a countless number of opportunities have presented themselves to explore the countries in which my connecting flights land but I have never seized the moment; this is one of the main reasons I had chosen the International Affairs scholars program, to explore the world and be a doer instead of just a dreamer.
