Interview

For my peer interview I sat down and talked with Kim, a future Physical Therapy student who is currently in the middle of her application process.

Kim decided she wanted to go into PT after an injury she sustained when she was 16 running cross country in high school. Her interest only grew from there, and she applied to The Ohio State University aiming to graduate with a Bachelors of Science in Psychology. Kim is currently a junior at The Ohio State University.

I asked Kim about the courses she took, and how she felt about them. She told me that she took Biology 1114 and all of the other additional coursework required for Physical Therapy schools such as abnormal psychology, medical terminology, and more. Even as a third year in college Kim said, for her, Gen Chem II (1220) still remains the hardest course she took.

I asked Kim if she had any advice to give to a freshman with thoughts of going into physical therapy, and she definitely had good thoughts to share. Kim told me to start looking and planning sooner rather than later, and stay ahead of the game. She also recommended taking the five credit hour anatomy course, and the five credit hour physiology course WITH a lab if possible. She also recommended joining the Pre-PT club, shadowing, and looking into what type of PT specialization (such as in patient/ out patient, geriatrics, etc.) I am interested in most.

My interview with Kim went very well, and she was extremely helpful and kind. Her advice was sound and I truly appreciated what she had to tell me. Thank you Kim!

Year in Review

My first year at The Ohio State University is nearing its close and as I look back on my time spent at this amazing campus I can happily say that I am satisfied with my time as a freshman. Although there were a fair share of trials and tribulations, most notably my struggle to find a major that I truly felt served myself well, I think even these problems served as excellent stepping stones for my own personal growth and development. Not to mention that all of the issues I had throughout my year were solved one way or another. I found a major – Kinesiology – that I feel really suits myself personally, I met and became close with a solid group of friends, and I expanded upon and firmly established my personal identity. All in all, I believe I had an excellent first year and I’m looking forward to the next year at The Ohio State University.

Career

My time at OSU has been a great experience and very enjoyable. I’ve been able to be a part of so many fun experiences with both new and old friends. At OSU, I’ve met some great people as well as stayed connected to my old high school friends. OSU Football games, dorm life, and other events have all been very enjoyable.

While at OSU I’ve made it my goal to maintain my physical health and improve even more upon it, as well as my mental and emotional health. Working out has served as my best stress reliever and a way for me to end the day and prepare for the next one. JO South has been a lifesaver.

In terms of my future, I now have a much more clear idea of what I plan to do. I enrolled at OSU in psychology, but it turned out that was not my calling. After some weeks of deliberation I had discovered Nursing and found out that it was much more suited for me. As I continue to grow at OSU I hope to strengthen my attraction to Nursing as well as the campus itself. Coming from a smaller town, Columbus has been an entirely new experience. However, it’s definitely been a good one.

About Me

IMG_0595Hey! My name is Rickey Magoteaux, and I am a Health Sciences Scholar majoring in Psychology. My interest in Psychology has slowly grown throughout my life, and choosing it as my major seemed natural. Besides majoring in Psychology, I plan to also obtain a minor in Business, and I have my sights set on Law school after graduation. I am originally from Lima, Ohio, where I grew up for my entire life. I attended Shawnee Schools from pre-school until graduation. While in high school I was a part of the National Honors Society, and I swam competitively until a shoulder injury forced me to quit. After that, I began to work out nearly everyday, improving my fitness for my own personal goals. My time at Shawnee was extremely impactful upon my character, filled with both tragedy and success, and it has shaped me into the person I am today. I met friends who I never thought I’d become so close to, and will remain so for my entire life. I deeply and wholeheartedly enjoyed my high school experience, and I hope to feel the same at OSU. While in college, (when I’m not studying), I plan to be active in clubs and intramural sports. In my spare time, I enjoy working out, listening to music (and discovering new music), and being with my friends. I hope to meet new people, take part in many new experiences, and make memories to last a lifetime. I am excited to see what my time at OSU will bring, and I am proud to be a buckeye!
