Fall Semester 2016

Thus far my first semester of college has been an amazing experience! My arts and sciences seminar, my major advisor and many other mentors have been of invaluable help to me in this leg of my college journey. In my seminar and survey classes I gained an understanding of what careers suited my skill set, which happily aligned with my love for science.

Given my passion for science I want to explore other scientific fields in addition to my major. I will be taking an Intro to Earth science class next semester to broaden my scientific background.

The learning resources available have been a great aid towards gaining a holistic understanding of my coursework and career options. I personally use the library resources most often, especially when I’m working on assignments!

While most of my focus is on my academics and training, my mental and physical wellness has been an extremely important facet of my freshman year experience. Apart from the morning PT sessions with my NROTC unit, I attend boxing club practices, swim several times a week and go for long runs on the weekend. Developing this weekly routine greatly contributed to my growth and ability to balance and excel at several different commitments. As this routine has become such an integral part of my daily activities I am sure I will stick to it for my upcoming years at OSU!

Just back from an early morning run

In my future years at OSU I would like to get involved in academic and social pursuits that relate to my passions for science, travel and service.

Places I’ve been over the years; hopefully there will be many more!

In high school I swam in a swim-a-thon to raise money for relief efforts for Typhoon Haiyan. This experience led me to research more into the different disaster relief organizations, which is where I first came across Project Hope. I joined this organization earlier this semester as I wanted to contribute to the humanitarian assistance and disaster relief efforts that nonprofit organizations such as this group perform.  I would like to continue working with similar organizations in the future.

My interest in service is also woven into my academic plans. In the future (potentially my sophomore year) I would like to take the two firefighting courses offered at OSU:

  • Intro to wildland Fire Management
  • Intro to wildland Fire Management Laboratory.

As I wish to keep up with my training as an emergency first responder.

As my first semester at OSU draws to a close I have gained a certainty regarding my future career and academic pathways as well as my future goals. I know that the career I pursue will certainly integrate all my passions for science, travel and service. My experiences at THE Ohio State University will leave me all the richer and better prepared for it!
