SP ’19 Volunteerism

This semester, I volunteered for 12 hours at Buckeyethon. Buckeyethon is a celebration of the fundraising that Ohio State has done for the Nationwide Children’s Hospital. In order to participate in the dance marathon, I raised over $250. Ohio State as a whole raised over 1.7 million  dollars. After seeing the kids and their families whom are affected by pediatric cancer, I was able to feel grateful for the healthy life I have. This event has impacted me as a leader by using my voice and raising money for these kids and encouraging others to do the same. Because of service learning I am enabled to show compassion for others and use what I have to help others in need.

AU ’18 Volunteerism

During the Autumn 2018 semester, I completed a total of 10 service hours through 3 organizations.

Volunteered to help clean up Iuka Park on October 20th from 10 am- 1pm

  • Organization: OSU Honors and Scholars
    • heard about it through the Honors and Scholars Instagram page @osuhonorsscholars
    • contact info: Johnson.7662@osu.edu
  • Service Provided: trash pickup

Volunteered to time Ohio State’s swim meet vs. Denison and Akron on November 2nd from 5:30-8:30

  • Signed up through VolunteerMatch : https://ohiostate.volunteermatch.org/search/opp2999310.jsp
    • Contact info: Daniel Wray wray.90@osu.edu
    • Background: anyone can sign up through that website and then get trained before the meet on how to time the races throughout the swim meet
  • Service provided: Lane timing

Volunteered for the Allstate hot chocolate expo on November 16th from 2-6p.m.

  • Background: Allstate sponsors the Hot Chocolate 15k/5k that fundraises and donates to the make-a-wish foundation. They needed volunteers to help with the expo on the Friday before the race to pass out the bibs and other items to the participants of the race.
    • link: www.hotchocolate15k.com/columbus/give/volunteer
  • Service Provided: Bib Assignment

What I have learned during each of my volunteer opportunities, is that some events can not be possible without volunteers who are willing too execute the duties involved in each event. For the trash pickup, it would have not gotten done in just 4 hours if nobody volunteered. The swimmers wouldn’t have their races timed if it weren’t for us volunteers who timed them, and the runners of the hot chocolate 15k/5k would not have gotten their bibs if it weren’t for the volunteers.

What I learned about myself from volunteering, is that I feel better about myself after volunteering. I feel as though volunteering is a good use of my time and that I am acting as a good citizen when I volunteer. I enjoy seeing people being happy/ enjoying the services provided by the volunteers.

Volunteering has bettered my leadership skills, because while volunteering, aspects of leadership were practiced. Taking the 7 C’s into consideration, volunteering has enabled me to incorporate collaboration and common purpose into my life.

Because of service learning I am a better citizen.

True Colors Reflection

During my Dunn Sports and Wellness class, I took a true colors test. This is a personality test and I obtained the color orange as my result. This result means that I value competition, spontaneity, and adventures. I also had gold as a close second. Gold means that I am organized, dependable, and cooperative. I agree with these results because I am an opportunistic person and I enjoy to live life to the fullest, but I also value have some structure in my life so that I can be productive with my time, but also have fun when it comes time. Some ways in which I can apply these virtues into my scholars group and/or other teams I am apart of is by bringing life and joy to all the actions I embark on. Something can be structured, but that doesn’t; mean it has to be boring. I will bring open-mindedness to the table. One of my pet peeves is boredom, so if I exemplify a passion for activities and embody energy and excitement then it will make each activity and task more enjoyable for my team.

Dunn Scholars

My definition of leadership is the act of someone bringing together a group of different-minded people to attain a common goal.

  • An example of leadership in sports is when the captain or a coach of a sports team brings the team together and shows them what needs to be done in order to have a successful game/season.

This is an example of leadership because..

  • Someone is helping others to be successful
  • Someone takes matters into their own hands and communicates with their team to achieve their common goal.

About Me

My name is Allison Maan de Kok and I am starting my first year at The Ohio State University. I am eager to begin exploring the different fields of engineering. I would like to major in either Industrial and Systems Engineering or Chemical Engineering. I plan on graduating in 4 years and obtaining a career in one of these fields. Participating in sports is something I have been passionate about for my whole life. In high school I played club volleyball and I plan on trying out for the club volleyball team at The Ohio State. A huge reason I chose Dunn Sport and Wellness Scholars (DSWS) program over an Engineering Scholars program is so I could have a balance of sports and academics during my college years. I am eager to engage in the endless activities and opportunities for growth that DSWS offers. Aside from school, I have spent time these past years traveling with my family. I’ve traveled to New Orleans, Hawaii, Arizona, and Florida with them in the past and I am grateful that I was able to experience the different cultures and scenery that are presented in the other states.

My hobbies include going to football games, binge watching Netflix, and going shopping. I am thankful to be a part of DSWS because it has already given me a strong group of friends that I can do these things with. I am from a north suburb 45 minutes out of Chicago and I am ready to take on this new chapter of my life and become more independent. My mom is a teacher in at Lyon Magnet, Illinois and my dad is an executive salesman for Equifax. I am their youngest child below Mitch (22) who just graduated from The Ohio State and Luke (21) who will be going into his senior year at Iowa State.

I can’t wait to see how much I will grow while attending The Ohio State!
