The class session on leadership and strengths was eye opening to me. I did not realize just how relevant the strengths actually were to my life. Three of my strengths include adaptability, communication, and empathy.
Adaptability: A situation in which adaptability as a strength helped me was the Arts Scholars trip to NYC. I had a list of things I wanted to see and do, but I had no idea with who and when I could do them. During the trip, I had a plan that I wanted to follow in order to get everything done within the amount of free time that I had. I quickly learned that my plan was not going to work out because everyone around me had different ideas and I had to find people to travel around with. If I did not have adaptability as a strength, I would have had a horrible time and not been able to enjoy my trip. However, I was able to adapt and “go with the flow” in order to find things that I wanted to do and people with whom I could enjoy myself. I ended up having a wonderful time, and was able to fit everything that I wanted to do in.
Communication: Communication is very important skill in my life. This is so important because I can not imagine myself working in an isolated environment. Therefore, communication is a necessary strength to have in order to be successful working with others. Communication will also help me on the ultimate Frisbee field. In order to have a successful team, communicating on and off the field is essential. For example, while on the field it is essential to talk to fellow teammates about where to go and get the disk. Also, communication off the field is equally important in order to help those on the field make effective plays. Always remember, communication is key!
Empathy: Empathy is a strength that I was not expecting to use as much as I have this first semester of college. My roommate went through something that is hard for anyone to go through at any point in his/her life. However, she had to go through this very tough time at arguably one of the hardest transition periods in one’s life. I do not know what I would do if I did not have empathy as a strength. I truly hope to be able to help her as she goes through this time and tries to move on with her life. This strength is allowing me to comfort (or at least attempt to comfort) her and hopefully allow us to have a happy second semester!
These strengths have helped me realize more about myself, and I hope to continue to learn more about myself through these strengths.
