Leadership Development

Leadership Development:

For the 2016-2017 school year, I will be the co-president of an OSU organization called Volunteers Around the World-Dental Branch. The priorities of this organization are:

1. Regular involvement in both local and global volunteer opportunities (underserved dental areas)

2. Emphasize team cohesiveness (social events, more of a friendly atmosphere)

3. Have a long lasting impact on the community through teamwork

This was the organization that I traveled to the Dominican Republic with over the past winter break for an oral healthcare outreach trip. I am very excited to see where my leadership skills will take me and our organization this upcoming school year.

Major Service Project

Building strong girls

GOTR logo w circles

Project Title: Girls on the Run Franklin County

Service Site Name: Clinton Elementary School

Describe your involvement with this organization

I have been volunteering at this organization since last fall. When I was rushing for my sorority, Gamma Phi Beta, their philanthropy stood out to me. After officially joining the sorority, I knew I had to get more involved with their philanthropy because the cause is something I hold very close to me. The concept of Building Strong Girls is a universal idea that all girls deserve to experience. No girl deserves to feel left out, ashamed of who they are, or resort to unhealthy habits just because of the people they were around when they were younger. At a young age, girls these days are already told what they are supposed to look like, dress like, etc. The organization Girls on the Run teaches girls what it means to stand out from the crowd (in a positive way). Through a variety of workshops, positive self-esteem and healthy lifestyles are taught by being incorporated into running activities. At the end of each season, each Running Buddy volunteer (what I am) runs a 5K with one of the girls.

Describe what you gained as a result of this experience.

I have gained a huge amount of love for this philanthropy as a result of this experience. At the end of last season, I ran with a girl named let’s just say Emily in the 5K. I could tell Emily felt a little insecure during our practices and was trying really hard to fit in with the other girls. However, she still had a wonderful attitude at the beginning of each meeting and she was very pleased with herself when she finished her 5K. She never thought she could do it because of her asthma or her bad ankle. I could tell she felt better about herself when she finished the race and seeing her growth was an extremely rewarding experience for me. This season, I am still volunteering at the same site, but there are some new girls. The topics we have talked about have always gotten pretty heavy and a lot of girls have opened up about things that have been really bothering them. It makes me feel honored that they trust us and I love having a direct role in being their mental and physical support.

Describe positive changes to the community as a result of your service experience.

The girls at the elementary school are always really excited now to go to Girls on the Run practice. I think it makes them feel happy to be a part of a team with other girls who are struggling with issues along similar lines. The girls always make each other smile and it is a lot of positive energy going around. For example, the program does something called Energy Award Winner. This award is given to a different girl at the end of each practice and we make sure that eventually every girl gets to be it. The girls go around nominating each other and explaining why they are nominating said person (ex. for pacing themselves when running). It is really cute to listen to what the girls have to say about each other and it fosters an environment where girls feel they can be honest and open with each other.

Describe a person with whom you interacted that made a strong impression on you, positive or negative.

Every girl who has come up to me asking for a piggy back ride, to sit in my lap, or to run with me has made a positive impression on me. It makes me happy to see that these girls look up to me, especially when college has been so busy and difficult. I rarely get the chance to think about why I should be proud to be who I am otherwise. Going to GOTR is not only a positive experience for them, but also for me. I hope that these girls remember why they are so unique and really build up their confidence from this program. They have definitely helped me with that, whether they realize it or not.

Because of this service experience, I am a better mentor, friend, sister, and running buddy, as well as, prepared to stay involved with Building Strong Girls for the rest of my life.

Informational Interview

Informational interview with Ryan Humphreys:

1. Why did you select this individual to interview?

Ryan is a dental student. He is about to start school at Ohio State College of Dentistry in Fall of 2016. He was on the e-board for a dental club with me and we went on a trip to the Dominican Republic together over winter break. He went through the dental school application process very successfully and was able to give me advice on what to do and what not to do during the process since I will be applying in a couple of years.

2. Describe the major responsibilities associated with their current role.

Currently, Ryan is still in undergraduate. However, when he starts dental school, he will have a lot of responsibilities with his schoolwork the first two years since OSU dental school classes are all pass/fail. During his third and fourth year, he will be doing more clinicals and get to work with patients.

3. Discuss how the person prepared for this role, and if they provided you with any advice as what you might be able to do to prepare for a similar career.

Ryan studied really hard during his undergraduate years, was very responsible with managing deadlines for the AADSAS (online dental school application), prepared well for interviews, and did well on his DAT (dental admissions test). Because of his responsible choices, he was able to interview at and choose between quite a few dental schools in the U.S.

4. Summarize any insights from the interview that might be helpful in your academic or career preparation.

Ryan told me very specifically how he studied for each section of the DAT, when to open the AADSAS application, how to write a convincing personal statement, how to approach professors for letters of recommendation, very typical interview questions to prepare for, and many other things. I took notes on all of this and it was all extremely helpful. I feel a little bit better about the whole process after interviewing him.

Original Inquiry

Original Inquiry:

I have been interning 6 hours a week in the Emergency Department at Nationwide Children’s Hospital ever since August 2015. This experience has provided me a very unique opportunity to develop my patient interaction skills and be a part of clinical research. Basically, my job as an undergraduate research assistant is to screen for patients that are eligible for our 8-10 studies going on. This requires paying attention to what their coming in for, along with their demographics. If I find an eligible patient, I approach them and their parents, introduce the study, and try to obtain consent. One of our ongoing studies is a somewhat touchy subject and can be very uncomfortable if explained to the family in the wrong way. Being forced to approach strangers for this study has helped me learn not to take things personally when patients lash out at you, which is something I will definitely need to remember as a future dentist.

Year in Review

At the beginning of my college career as an HSS, I did not know much about what I wanted to do professionally or how I was even going to get there. All I knew was that I was and still am a very ambitious person and should always aim high with my professional goals. I explored a few different career paths through shadowing opportunities and decided dentistry was the best path for me. I love building relationships with long-time patients and the challenge of managing my own business, which is why I also picked up a Business minor.

Now, after taking quite a few introductory science classes, I have learned what my strengths and weaknesses as a student are. I have also learned what type of study habits work for me and I have stuck with them. Academically, I did not meet my initial expectations, but today I have learned to be proud of what I have accomplished. As a result, my GPA has greatly improved.

Additionally, I am quite happy with the friends I have made here, whether through HSS or not. For the remainder of my OSU experience, I want to focus more on myself. I want to keep developing my passions for people and for dentistry. I want to keep meeting people with completely different backgrounds than me and take advantage of all the resources Ohio State offers students. I love how easy it is to get involved on campus here. The extracurriculars I am involved in now are all things I have invested a lot of time in and really grown to care for.

About Me

10295927_10203739577076810_8267941473280188239_o

My name is Gracie Luo and I am a sophomore at The Ohio State University. After a lot of switching around, I finally decided on pursuing a Neuroscience degree here at Ohio State. The field itself still has so much to be discovered about it and learning about what is still unknown about the brain just further piques my interest. Because of this, I have started helping out as a research assistant with a clinical psychology study. This lab is located on the medical campus and focuses on improving employment turnover rates for mentally-disabled/ aggressive adults. I plan on later entering a dual degree program to get my DDS (doctor of dental surgery) and PhD.

Outside of my research position, I am very busy in other organizations. I am a second year member of the Health Science Scholars program. I am also involved in a club called Volunteers Around the World – Dental. We focus on educational outreach both locally and globally to under-served dental areas. Through this club, I was able to shadow and assist dentists in the Dominican Republic this past winter break and it really made me see how big the disparity in oral healthcare can be across the world. Lastly, I am also a member of a Panhellenic sorority, Gamma Phi Beta. This group of women constantly inspires me to be the best version of myself and I have met many of my closest friends through this organization.

Global Awareness

Global Awareness:

Over winter break, I traveled to the Dominican Republic with the newly-established Volunteers Around-Dental club. I was on the e-board in planning this trip and creating the club at OSU, so being able to go on the trip was also special for me because of that. We went to an impoverished area in central DR and provided oral health care to the locals, many of whom were adults who had never even gone to the dentist before. On this trip, I was able to shadow dentists, watch numerous cleaning and extraction procedures, learn how to properly sterilize dental instruments, and be immersed in a culture I had never been around before. Additionally, one of our days was an education day, so we went to a school and gave a presentation to the children on how to properly brush your teeth. When we walked into the room, they all started clapping and it made me realize yet again that dentistry is the career I need to pursue.
