Year in Review

For Global Awareness, I have sought deeply—since my time of entry in college—to encounter and remain in ample exchange with students from several different backgrounds and perspectives. I have tried to sustained a renewed degree of attention and engagement with hardships affecting marginalized communities. In light of the tragic deaths of African-Americans under police conduct, I became involved with Black Lives Matter discussions amongst alumni and students at my high school in discussing practical dimensions of responding to injustices within our community and in allyship. I have studied—independently, in groups, and in coursework—various perspectives regarding injustice, differing belief systems or political ideologies, and ongoing developments in the world today. This attention and discipline to keep abreast of the challenges affecting communities of people worldwide is something which I strive to attend to and particularly develop during the crossroads of my collegiate education.

For Original Inquiry, I have striven to complete my due diligence and pursue the study of several disciplines independently, in coursework, and also in formal contexts. Whether regarding history in race relations and institutional reforms of governments; previously serving as a lab assistant for an archeology lab at the Museum for Biological Diversity; or in writing papers or reviews of these and other academic subjects, I have found informative and instructive the discipline of sifting through interdisciplinary scholarship, weighing the merits of competing arguments, and furnishing a coherent and stable assessment of conditions and patterns within different subjects of inquiry. Revision of academic pursuits and lifelong learning is important for this process.

For Academic Enrichment, I have taken agency to develop a conversance with several scholastic disciplines, their methods of inquiry, conceptual frameworks, and standards of effective scholarship through my coursework. In addition to the courses for my major of neuroscience (prospectively to change to history, in which I have also taken several courses), I have sought to impart measured effort in sifting through different perspectives in published literature, remaining in exchange with colleagues in these courses and understanding ways in which my studies can be improved, and my perspectives revised, across subjects and concentrations. During the coronavirus in quarantine, I started course GroupMe’s, shared lecture notes, and useful study resources; while aiming to facilitate discussion of methods by which (Especially semantic or conceptual) can be more easily understood or memorized; and to galvanize collective engagement by drawing from one another’s strengths in conceptual learning. Especially in honors courses and in seminars, I hope to continue to refine my experience with, and attention to detail in, practices of effective and productive education.

For Leadership Development, I have pursued several avenues through which I can strive to reconcile differing claims amongst groups and communities, and guide individuals with uncertainty in their paths, to be organized and disciplined in their efforts. Through Neuroscience Ambassadors, I was able to reach out to students involved with the Neuroscience program and provide advice for them in the pursuit of their major. Continuing virtual tutoring at Kumon, I help instruct students across several levels of reading, literature, and also mathematics; while writing extensive notes for feedback on their performance. I have also volunteered regularly at a Learning Extension center to help students from challenging backgrounds; whether immigrants from Africa, or students in unstable households.

For Service Outreach, I have devoted my energies, in my time at Ohio State, to the service of communities where needs are deeply felt and where—upon receiving illustration of what help is requested—I am deemed to be able to effectively contribute to the redress of challenging conditions. I served as Director of Programming for a pilot program at the Martha Morehouse Outpatient Center (in correspondence with the Ohio State Chronic Brain Injury Association, BRAIN executive board, and Directors of Networking and Budgeting for Neuro Nights), developing a 5-month curriculum for monthly programs at the Outpatient Center for events to promote various areas of wellness in the process of recovery featuring panel (mj?) discussions and activities with experts in relevant disciplines.

G.O.A.L.S.

I will commit myself to Global Awareness by remaining in active, civilized and productive discussions amongst colleagues and students I meet during and throughout the gamut of my studies throughout University, being sure to include a wide and diverse range of perspectives and backgrounds, such that I can affirm the culture that is spread from several hearths amongst people who have made great and enduring travels to attain an education to better prepare themselves to serve the world.

I will commit myself to Original Inquiry first by maintaining a longstanding habit of active reflection and journaling in private settings, as well as consistent revision and reflection upon my ideas and understanding of essential concepts for my philosophy, ideals, and knowledge in public settings. I will strive to ensure that whenever I adopt or take into further consideration a new idea, construct, or axiom, I always note or bear in mind its source, such that I recognize the role of a colleague or expert in introducing such concepts to his or her readership.

I will commit myself to Academic Enrichment, partly through proactive engagement within a diverse range of classes for my academic concentration, as well as to find Unity in Diversity (the reason which is often understood to be the reason why the Universities were established by the Greeks). But beyond the lecture halls and classroom, I will continue to advance towards scholastic excellence and experience in the literature I read independently, the independent learning and studies which I pursue beyond the demands of my classes, and hopefully the rise of abilities to undertake research projects and fellowships.

I will commit myself to Leadership Development, both in leading by example through every word and deed I carry out in the public eye and behind closed doors; as well as in serving offices for which I have been deemed strongly fit and capable of wielding powers for a greater good. Thus far, I have engaged with and will persist to strive for leadership in such areas as Buckeyes Raising Awareness in Neuroscience, as well as in Best Buddies.

I will commit myself to Service Engagement through a proactive and enduring level of participation in events within and beyond my major which allow me to attend to the growing needs of underserved individuals in areas and places near and far, to more deeply recognize the latent problems which exist amongst these populations and individuals, and to pronounce these problems to the public through my efforts of spreading awareness, through leadership extended in these efforts of service, and in rallying a movement to address those ills in active, dynamic, and innovative projects.
