Year In Review

My first year of college was a rather unique experience. I visited campus 3 times prior to the beginning of my freshman year. I entered college already with a strong work ethic which did not make the transition to college level courses as difficult as it otherwise would be. I entered the STEM EE group feeling uncertain and unsure about how college worked exactly. I knew a little about Scholars, but had not looked very hard into the STEM group until I was selected to become a STEM EE scholar. I had very little information about what exactly I would be doing as a scholar. I was unaware of what lied in store for me during my first year of college.

I thoroughly enjoyed attending many of the group events hosted by STEM EE. As first year scholars, we were required to attend at least eight events each semester. Often the events were held every Tuesday evening, which worked well for my schedule consistently planning for attending the sessions at a regularly scheduled time. The events presented many interesting ideas and concepts within the various fields of STEM. I found the Science Sundays (hosted by outside groups, but still considered as an event for STEM scholars to attend) to be one of my favorites. I learned fascinating information about electronics and computer history that I otherwise would have never gained without going to the lectures.

Other organizations and groups outside of STEM EE have also aided in my development as a student and person. Spring semester I began attending meetings for the Alexander Hamilton Society (AHS). AHS is a nonpartisan debate club which focuses on issues of foreign policy between the U.S. and countries all across the globe. Many highly regarded individuals such as political science professors and even former government employees who served in respected positions within our federal government have appeared at the debates to voice their opinions on contemporary foreign policy issues. Attending these debates have expanded my view of politics and inspired me to further explore and research issues that may not be fully grasp by listening to a news anchor speak on it through a television broadcast.

My level of maturity has certainly grown throughout my individual development at Ohio State and within STEM EE. I believe I have become more responsible because of my path and how I’ve developed a stronger work ethic. I had a complete lack of any work ethic during the beginning of high school. After my father was fed up with my apathy towards my studies, he vigorously worked to instill into me a strong sense of pride and work ethic. My work ethic has been gradually increasing since high school, but until college I had not been able to see how far I had developed compared to when I was a freshman in high school. Even comparing myself to when I first began last August at Ohio State, I can absolutely see a strong contrast between that individual and the person I currently am today.

GOALS Essay

Service Engagement speaks to me greatly as a facet of G.O.A.L.S. Since high school, I have given many hours of my life to service and volunteering. At CAK (Christian Academy of Knoxville) students were required each academic year to devote at least 10 hours of community service. The hours of service were actually part of the graduation requirements, so there were many opportunities available for me to serve in. One of my most recent service experiences was through BUCK-I-SERV at Ohio State. Through BUCK-I-SERV I went on a trip to Mobile, Alabama to work with Habitat for Humanity. The trip was during my spring break and I had an excellent time with the work and experience while there.

I personally see service engagement as an integral component of my future going forward. I’ve devoted many hours to service previously in my life. As a member of the workforce, I foresee myself still committing my own time to volunteer causes. Wherever I end up living in the future, I will absolutely be looking for different organizations to get involved with service engagement.

Original Inquiry is the second facet of G.O.A.L.S. that I believe truly speaks to me. Although I loathe the tedious process of doing a research paper, I truly enjoy doing solid research. When I come across a topic I am either ignorant about or simply have little knowledge regarding it, I tend to always want to learn more about it. I don’t believe anyone should be bounded to gaining knowledge exclusively within the classroom. Showing the motivation to seek more information outside of academics proves a true ability to desire gaining more knowledge by oneself.

Many topics that I never learned in class I have taken my own time to independently inform myself about. In 11th grade US History the unit on World War I was extremely brief. Although I was quizzed on this material and tested on it, I didn’t feel as if the class devoted enough time to teaching about this subject. Outside of the class, I found a website devoted to several history topics that goes into much more depth every covered within the classroom. I believe high school history textbooks only cover the ‘big stuff’ that happened in US history. For some reason, this big stuff is usually devoted exclusively to the American Revolution, the Civil War, and World War II. I feel as if this isn’t a proper way of teaching history, so using original inquiry I was able to delve into less covered topic that get far less attention in the classroom.

As an adult, I plan to continue pursuing original inquiry in my life. It may be more than just researching history. I have always wanted to learn a new language like French, but never seem to have the time to devote myself to such a large endeavor. As I grow in my career, I hope to gain better time management skills in order to find room for tasks such as that in my life.

Critical Reflection

Applying to Scholars was one of my best decisions I have made so far in college. The STEM EE scholars group has been an excellent way for me to familiarize myself with people who are studying a common theme or subject. Although there are very few scholars in my group who share my major (Data Analytics), I have been able to learn plenty about fields I was not familiarized with previously (such as Engineering). Many of the events hosted for the scholars group are entertaining lectures about fun topics, but also do an excellent job of integrating the fields of STEM into the discussion.

Welcome to my Honors & Scholars e-Portfolio

My ePorfolio contains some general information about myself. My college search, role model, and views on being a member of STEM EE are covered within it. The general tone of my About Me section is straightforward. I briefly introduce myself, my family and where I’m from in the opening paragraph. The rest of the ePortfolio covers personal information about the influence my father has had on my life as my role model, and my college search I did not fully engage in until early in my senior year of high school. My future career goal is to earn a job position in the emerging field of ‘big data’ after earning my major in Data Analytics. My skills include a problem solving attitude for new challenges, determination, and a drive to achieve my best possible in all areas of work. The purpose of my ePortfolio is to provide someone with general background information about myself and my plans during and after college.
