For me, global awareness will hopefully entail a study abroad program during my time at a Ohio State. I hope to take my knowledge of chemistry and further my experience in sustainability projects in underdeveloped areas, undergoing projects and research to diminish poverty and create new opportunities for independent communities to emerge and flourish. In addition, I am looking forward to taking several cultural and comparative studies classes at OSU that will allow me to become more culturally adept and intuitive. This area of the H&S G.O.A.L.S also ties strongly with my view of service engagement. By traveling to areas where sustainability is scarce or even absent, I am planning to involve my experience in the classroom and lab with real world issues that involve resource regulation and proper dispersion. Through science, I will be able to serve others and hopefully develop a path to a more healthy and self-sufficient environment. During my time at Ohio State, I also want to branch out into less familiar areas of academia than what I have encountered previously in and out of high school. A major interest of mine is Greek and Roman mythology and taking history or literature classes in these areas would enhance my comprehension and writing capabilities, while also engaging me through a topic I am actually interested in. Furthermore, I will be attempting to take the Honors version of courses whenever applicable as to challenge myself to a level I never experienced in high school classes. Not only will this allow me to have a more well-rounded sense of education, but also all of these classes outside of the sciences will instill different strategies and skills to continue my prowess as a chemistry major and hopefully a scientist in general.
Leadership has always been something I found enjoyable and I hope to continue my experience with collaborative projects and leadership roles throughout my four years here. My main aspiration is pursuing a research project as an undergraduate in chemistry and sustainability that will hopefully translate to applications in today’s society after graduating. The research aspect of my goal also ties strongly with the H&S topic of original inquiry. Moreover, I hope to at some point make my research a collaborative effort with other students and peers pursuing similar interests in and out of the field of chemistry. For me, coupling science and service is the ultimate goal for my career and using sustainability research as a gateway to this goal would be feasible under the outstanding faculty and student body here at OSU. Over the next four years, I hope to have achieved these goals and more in my pursuit of a degree and a lifelong project continuing my research and service.
