Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

[ “G.O.A.L.S.” is a place where students write about how their planned, current, and future activities may fit into the Honors & Scholars G.O.A.L.S.: Global Awareness, Original Inquiry, Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development, and Service Engagement. For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Delete these instructions and add your own post.

Global Awareness: Students cultivate and develop their appreciation for diversity and each individual’s unique differences. For example, consider course work, study abroad, involvement in cultural organizations or activities, etc .
Original Inquiry: Honors & Scholars students understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community. For example, consider research, creative productions or performances, advanced course work, etc.
Academic Enrichment: Honors & Scholars students pursue academic excellence through rigorous curricular experiences beyond the university norm both in and out of the classroom.
Leadership Development: Honors & Scholars students develop leadership skills that can be demonstrated in the classroom, in the community, in their co-curricular activities, and in their future roles in society.
Service Engagement: Honors & Scholars students commit to service to the community.]

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.   For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Marching Band- In high school, playing trumpet and being a part of the marching band played a huge role in my life. Over the course of four years, marching band taught me how to be a team player and really appreciate all of the hard work and dedication that goes into being apart of something that big. My senior year, I was also given the opportunity to be a member of the Leadership Team, where I was one of 3 leaders for the Trumpet section. This position taught me patience, how to respect everyone, and how to bring the best out of everyone. I feel like all of these skills are something that I will use for the rest of my life, and am grateful that marching band taught me these lessons.

Declaring my Major- Coming into OSU, I decided to go undeclared engineering as my major, because I hadn’t quite narrowed down my search of what I wanted to do when I grow up. Being an undeclared engineering student, I was enrolled in a survey class that was focused on exploring the different disciplines of engineering, in hopes of narrowing the search down to at least two. Over the course of the 7 week class, I narrowed the choices down to 1 and officially switched over electrical engineering. Although I am not officially in the major yet until I apply, I feel like this was a big defining moment for me, because I was finally able to pinpoint what excites me and can see myself doing for the rest of my life! I can’t wait to apply next fall and hopefully begin my career in electrical engineering.

About Me

In the Fall of 2015, I will begin studying engineering (undecided). My current career path is leaning more towards electrical or computer engineering. My educational goals at Ohio State is to earn a Bachelor’s degree in engineering, and hopefully  to complete a Master’s degree. I hope to use this education to secure a lasting career in engineering. During my time at Ohio State, I also hope to gain many workplace experiences, whether it is through an internship, co-op, or research opportunities. I have been accepted into the Humanitarian Engineering Scholar’s program where I will gain more knowledge and experiences than I could ever hope for! Being in this Scholar’s program, I hope I will be able to further my knowledge and then be able to share this with other people.

During my time at Kettering Fairmont High School, I was given the opportunity to enroll in many AP and Honors courses like AP Calculus BC, AP Physics II, AP Statistics, and AP English, all leading me to graduate with a weighted GPA of 4.25 and in the top 5% of my class. Not only was I enrolled in many advanced classes, but I was also given the opportunity to take classes that introduced me to engineering which included Intro to Engineering and Design I and II, as well as Principles of Engineering. Through all of these classes, I have determined I work best in a group setting where we can all listen and learn from each other to excel at what we are doing. One example of this is where a team and I created and designed a school bus seat compartment. As a team, we had to come up with the design, make a prototype, and even design the packaging for it to come in. Another example happened in my Calculus BC class where a few classmates and I formed a study group in order to help better learn and understand the material. We all had our different strengths and were able to help each other problem solve and learn the material.  All of these classes combined have given me a good background into college and engineering courses that will help me excel at Ohio State. Aside from my academic career at Kettering Fairmont, I was also very active within my school and community. The club that I took the most pride in was the Human Trafficking Awareness Club, in which I helped create and was the co-president of for three years. In this club, we helped bring community awareness to the issue of human trafficking. We often visited local schools and churches to present information about the topic, and we even hosted a community awareness event that attracted over 300 people.  In school, I was also an active member of Latin Club, Buddy System (mentored special needs students), Firebird Camp (helped incoming freshman with their transition into high school), Octagon Club (service-based club), National Honor Society, and marching band where I was a section leader. In my community, I was able to volunteer as a Holiday at Home Ambassador, where we assisted festival goers and merchants with anything they needed, and the Kettering Backpack Program.
