Interview with My Advisor
Walking crisply to the Fisher college of Business, I looked at my phone two or three times, trying my best to memorize the words and letters in my memo. It was a short distance to my destination, so I had to stop for couple times in order to prepare the words fluently. After stopped for few times, I took a deep breath, stretched my body, and made a confident face look, went to the office of her.
“Okay, now calm down. You do not have to be stressful. She’s your advisor, and she will not kill you.” I said to myself.
It was the first time I prepared the questions to a certain person and need her response formally. Although I tried my best to calm myself down, and drank a lot of water, it was useless for me to accept that I will be the interviewer today, and the person that I interview is my advisor, who talk less personally.
Okay, now I stepped into the office, and I saw her. She is so young that I cannot believe she will be my advisor for the rest of years in my college life. She dressed like an experienced business women, used to wear suits and high heels showing up in our classes. However, it is not like that today. She wore a white shirt and a suit pants, no ties today, looked different but still, not like a mature office lady. If temperaments have colors, she must be green, like a growing cirrus slowly becomes taller and finally reaches the end of the wall. What special is that she always ties her ponytail, and this is unusual for me. She’s like a girl, but not a mature office lady, and I used to keep us with a friendship, rather than mentorship.
“Okay, so why are you here today?” She asked me with her crispy voice.
Ah, that voice again, again filled in my ear. Really, she is not like a teacher. But the way she talk is really comfortable, enunciate clearly, which certainly satisfied me as an international student. Unlike those engineer professors, whose voice could force you to achieve a lot of goals, of course in dreams.
“I am here for an interview that set by my teacher, may I ask you a few questions” I said it! I did it! It is so early in morning that I thought I would not speak fluently.
“Yeah, no problem, what is your question?” She answered me, and I looked at her eyes. Her eyes are blue, like a pond that set next to a forest and a small log cabin. Rarely to see blue eye people in my country, but I want to say it was gorgeous.
“So, the first question is that: Do you value friendship higher than the other kind of relationships? Such as love or family?” I asked.
“Romantic love would base on friendship, so it will fall into the back line of my choice. Speaking of family, it is the first priority of my relationships, because it is the most powerful relationship that you could have in the whole world, and your family would give you unlimited supports for your growth. Ehh, friendship would in the middle.” She answered quickly, like she prepared this question for a long time.
I was not reacting at that time, and after a few seconds, I took the notes, and asked the next question, and next question.
I went out the building, took a deep breath, stretched my body, and made a confident face look. After this interview, I knew more about my advisor, and knew that my advisor, who is a wise person, taking control of her life by herself, and taking the responsibility to work for her family. She is not young, she is a lady with wisdom and the open mind to have the mindset to survive in this society, and she is a lady whose life philosophy can be written down as a model in my mind.
She is not young, and she is my advisor, the person that I can trust in the next few years. She is Jenay Manydeeds, my advisor.
