G.O.A.L.S.

In high school,  I had to do a required amount of service each year so I did a good amount of service all throughout high school. I have done 2 service trips, one in Michigan and one in Pennsylvania. I have spent numerous hours in the Akron-Canton Food Bank. And I have done a great amount of little volunteer work here and there throughout my lifetime. One thing I have always wanted to do was to go on a service trip that was out of the country, but have never gotten the opportunity to. I hope that through Ohio State, I can be able to achieve that goal.

This past summer I went on a week-long service trip to Pittsburg, PA with my church youth group. My small group and I’s job for the week was to paint the entirety of a woman’s house. She was an extremely kind human being and I enjoyed being around her. She suffers from bipolar disorder and anxiety disorder, and it began to take it’s toll throughout the week. As the week progressed, she became less and less social and you could tell that she was becoming a little annoyed with our presence all day. It made me realize that I need to live every day to my fullest because I don’t know what’s going to happen to me over the course of my life that could potentially keep me from doing things that make me happy.

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. When I was in high school, I was very involved with my church and my youth group. Within my first year, I became second in command for hospitality and went on many service trips with them, small and large. I wanted to continue that entering college, so I joined a bible study on campus to help to keep my involvement with the church in tact. I hope as the next four years go on, I can become more involved with the Newman Center, whether it be leading a bible study or going on a service trip through the church.

This semester in my scholars class, we were asked to do a project with a group of people that was based on the 4 pillars of the ACE scholars. We were to watch a documentary and relate the message of the movie to the pillars. My group watched the documentary “The Hunting Ground.” This documentary was based on girls being raped on their college campus. The movie was very heart-wrenching and was very inspirational. This movie exemplified positive social change, through the girls who were helping each other with all of their sufferings. It exemplified advocacy because the girls were giving voices to those affected by sexual assault who are too afraid to speak up. It exemplified community because the girls came together as one to fight their battles against their colleges. And it exemplified service because the main two girls did their best to help every girl who was going through a hard time with their rape case.

About Me

My name is Emily Lowe and I am a first-year student at The Ohio State University. I am 19 years old and am from Medina, Ohio. I am a Speech and Hearing Science major and plan on becoming a speech pathologist in a school setting primarily focusing on children with learning and mental disabilities.  I love working with kids and have been working as a lifeguard and swim lesson instructor at my local rec center for the past three years. These jobs have provided an amazing experience throughout my high school career. I have learned to be responsible for myself and for others and I have learned how to take care of any person in any situation of danger. I have learned to be extremely trustworthy and I am very quick on my feet and a quick learner.
