Career

From the end of May to the middle of July 2016, I interned with National Equity Fund in Chicago, Illinois. Although I had not taken an accounting class before my internship began, my boss and coworkers were more than willing to help my learn. After learning on the job for a summer I realized the importance of training. There are some people in the corporate world that are nervous to train younger employees because it threatens their job security. I was thankful that my coworkers were not nervous and instead taught me the basis of accounting. In addition, I learned how to use an electronic general ledger and accounting software and could put my excel knowledge to use. I enjoyed my time at National Equity Fund because of the people I worked with and their willingness to help me learn.

Global Awareness: During second session, I will begin an international business course through Fisher. I am excited to learn more about business between the US and other countries and how businesses that operate abroad are different than those in the US. We touched on some ideas of international business in my ACCT2200H course which makes me even more interested in taking an entire course on international business. I think this encompasses global awareness because it directly relates to the field I am studying and gives me insight on diversity and how it impacts businesses.

Original Inquiry: Last year I was a participant in many psych research studies. Although I have not gone to any this year, I have been working with data that those studies generated. My goal is to minor in Business Analytics which means compiling “big data” from surveys. Throughout the course of this year I have learned the basic statistics needed for compiling data. I am excited to continue in these classes and hopefully they will pay off in the future.

Academic Enrichment: Over Veterans Day weekend I competed with a team of five in Deloitte’s Tax Case Competition. I was given this opportunity through my Honors Accounting class. We won the regional competition and were given the opportunity to go to Deloitte University in Dallas, Texas. Although we did not win the national competition, I did learn a lot about tax and working under time constraints. For both competitions we had to present to Deloitte employees which was intimidating but a wonderful experience that I would encourage everyone to try.

Leadership Development: I was looking for ways to get more involved on campus when my friend posted about a new student organization they were starting. I asked if I could join them in developing the organization and we have been planning since July. Survivor: Time and Change is a semester-long version of the CBS show Survivor. Our season kickoff was at the beginning of this semester and I am looking forward to seeing the organization grow. My goal is to be able to run a well-organized season and be able to continue this in future years.

Service Engagement: Mount Leadership Society Scholars has the second years complete 75 hours of service before April. Some of these hours come from a service-learning class where we are assigned a service site. I was placed at the Karl Road Public Library. While I was there I helped students with their math, English and social studies homework. I have since switched to the Northside branch of the Columbus Public Libraries and I am looking forward to getting to know new students and helping them with their reading comprehension.

processional-2

One of the most memorable events during high school was when my choir director took our choirs to Disney World to sing in their Candlelight Processional. My sophomore and senior year of high school around 60 students and 10 adults loaded onto a plane early the morning after Thanksgiving to Orlando, Florida for our performance the following Monday. Both times I got the honor of singing on stage with Neil Patrick Harris as our guest narrator.

Disney does not let your average choir come and be transformed into a Cast Member for the day,  all the choirs have to audition and Disney picks the best and most enthusiastic. Once the choir gets approved by Disney, the choirs receive 10 pieces of music that we have to learn and memorize. Once we get to Disney, we have one rehearsal with everyone preforming on stage that night. Even though this is the first time the whole group is singing together, we barely have enough time to run  through all of the songs. Most of the rehearsal is spent getting into position and singing the beginning of each song.

For me, this trip was a culmination of all the work that I have put into singing throughout my life. When I was little, singing was more of a hobby so I only participated in my church choir. Then as I grew older more and more people told me I should join choir so I joined in eighth grade. That year I made so many new friends and I loved the choir and atmosphere so I could not stop singing. When I got into high school I knew I needed to stick with choir and I would have done anything to stay involved with the group. Of my eighth grade friends that convinced me to join choir, I was the only one who stuck through it till our senior year.

The Candlelight Processional was different from any other choir concert I had been involved in because it was no longer only our parents in the auditorium. This was a tradition for some families and represented the beginning of their holiday season, and I was a part of the group starting that for them. People paid a lot of money to hear us sing their favorite Christmas Carols for them and we were no longer average high school students, we were now Disney employees and we needed to keep the Disney smile on our faces the whole time.
