BEEF Cattle Letter: October 23

Registration NOW OPEN for the 2025 OSU Organic Grains Conference!

Registration has opened for the 3rd Ohio State Organic Grains Conference which will be Thursday-Friday, January 9-10, 2025.  This year’s conference will move to Kalahari Resorts & Conference Center in Sandusky, OH.  The new venue will allow for greater exhibitor space, concurrent sessions, more meal space and hotel rooms under one roof. Early bird registration closes on December 6th at is at the low rate of $140/person.  This includes 4 meals, conference materials, trade show, networking times, and free parking.

New Private Applicator Test Prep: November 7, 2024

This is an opportunity for folks that want to take the pesticide exam to earn their license. This is only for new applicators or folks who have had their license expire and need to take the test. Test scheduling can be done through the ODA website or by calling ODA. Registration is not required, but we ask that you call in advance to let us know what categories you plan to test in so we can plan accordingly for the test prep session. You can call the office at 440-326-5851 or email me at becker.643@osu.edu. The test prep will take place at the Lorain County Extension Office on November 7 from 10-noon. 

BYGL: Boxelder Bugs and Other Fall Home Invaders, October 21

Extensioneers have been receiving reports of fall home invaders trickling into Ohio homes. However, the predicted weather conditions for this coming weekend and early next week could turn the trickle of insects into a flood, particularly in the southwest part of the state.

Boxelder Bugs (Boisea trivittata, family Rhopalidae) have long been the “poster child” for insects that invade homes and other structures in the fall. Thanks to a tip from a BYGL reader, for the past three days, I’ve been taking pictures of a sizable aggregation of boxelder bugs on the trunk of a boxelder (Acer negundo, family Sapindaceae) in southwest Ohio. It’s the first sign that the bugs are planning a little breaking and entering.
