An item from my college experience that encaptures semester 1 for me is the breast cancer headband that the university gave out at one of the football games. It was given out during breast cancer awareness month, October, and I feel that it is representative of my college experience thus far for a few reasons. The first reason being that it raises awareness and asks the recipient to take a hard look at the things they are doing, and really evaluate their actions. What I mean by this is that the headband is a ‘fun’ way to connect with the youth, because its trendy and people like wearing it, but it also serves the purpose of raising awareness to breast cancer. So far in college, and especially in joining HES, awareness of other people and their ailments have been a main focus for me. Helping people is the main point of this scholars program, and the opportunity to help people outside of my scholars group, even by doing something as simple as wearing a headband, is something that I appreciated.

An item from my life that describes me very well is my pillow. It took me many years to find the perfect pillow, and I feel like that represents my life. It took me many years of trial and error to figure out what I want to be, who I want to be, and what kind of person I want to be. I finally found a pillow that suits me, just like I finally found a school where I am happy and surround myself with people and family that make me feel fulfilled.
