Summary

In the article, “Simple Ways to Optimize Your Mental Health While in College,” Michael Schroeder offers a list of ways students can take care of themselves through the academic and social demands of college.

Schroeder encourages students to pay attention to their own mood and feelings and emphasizes that getting help early for problems like anxiety and depression is very important. He says, “You needn’t be diagnosed with a mental health condition to benefit from taking steps to improve your psychological well-being”(Missing quotation marks) Bingtong Liu plagiarism KEY (para. 10). One of the steps you can take, he says, is exercise.Physical exercise is very important in preventing or reducing mental health problems.(Using too many of the same words) Bingtong Liu “plagiarism KEY”.  He explains that endorphins and other natural chemicals from exercise not only help cognitive functions but also reduce depression.  Furthermore, he says,  not exercising can cause weight gain, which can also affect mental health.

According to Schroeder, what you eat is also important, since diet affects mood and anxiety. can impact mood and anxiety levels .(Using too many of the same words) Bingtong Liu “plagiarism KEY” He warns students against quick fixes, like tobacco, alcohol, and drugs to boost mood.  He says these can result in bigger problems later.

Schroeder recommends mindfulness and meditation to help with uncomfortable situations and self-isolating behavior. He says mindfulness involves focusing on the present moment:  “Bringing awareness, acceptance, self-compassion, curiosity, and just noticing non-judgmentally those internal experiences as they’re arriving” (para. 6).  This, he says, is a good way to process difficult experiences or feelings.    Loving-kindness meditation, which he says is similar, is a practice by which we focus on positive experience and people and send thoughts and wishes to those we love.

Schroder argues that it is important to have outlets for coping with feelings and experiences, and for this he recommends journaling.  Also important, he says, is developing a network of social support – good friends and family – and staying in touch with them while avoiding people who are unsupportive.  According to Schroeder, not having a good social network has health risks, and research shows that those who are socially connected are mentally and physically healthier.  He suggests scheduling mental-wellness activities on our “to-do” list.

Insufficient sleep, says Shroeder, can negatively affect brain function and even awaken any genetic predisposition to mental illness; therefore, he emphasizes, it is very important to keep enough quality sleep.

Finally, Schroeder encourages students to become involved in activities that give their lives meaning and purpose, such as volunteering to help others.  He says experts claim that this is a very effective way to improve mental well-being.

My name is Bingtong Liu. I am from China and I live in Zhengzhou of Henan province. In my daily time, I really like playing badminton since I was a child. In primary school, I liked to play basketball, but I was often knocked down and injured by my opponents because of my thin body. Later, I learned about the sport of badminton from my father’s friend. He told me that you don’t have to be strong to win, and sometimes a 10-year-old can beat an adult. I felt a great curiosity about badminton then began to study. That’s why I m good at badminton.

I was born in Zhengzhou, so I have to study in Zhengzhou since I was young. I really understand the increasing academic pressure caused by my age. What impressed me most was my junior high school, because I didn’t adapt to courses of junior high school , so I became the bottom of the class. I once doubted my fitness, but my family, friends, and teacher didn’t give up. They encouraged me, so I studied hard then I went to the best high school in Zhengzhou. This is an important turning point for me of my study profile.

Coming to the Ohio state university is another important turning point for me. When I was in my junior high school graduation, I wanted to go abroad to study at that time, and my parents really supported to my idea, cause I can get more learning resources, and I will have more space to display my ability. My major is mathematics, which is a very wide range. I am now going toward to the direction of economics study, so I choose a macroeconomic for my minor because I feel that economy is very interesting, a lot of things happened in daily life can be explained by economics. For example, have you ever noticed that when you eat at an all-you-can-eat buffet, you always go away fuller than when you order and eat at a nonbuffet restaurant? Which means that economists look at facts to find incentives to economic behavior. That is why I like economics.
